She thinks the Chester Square area is quite a healthy location, and compares it with other parts of London. She enclosed a description of a charity hospital in which she is interested, & hopes Halford will make a donation. (Printed in Jones' edition Of Mary Shelley's letters (l9bh), no. 661-II,30l.) Dear Mr. Halford I delayed answering your note for a day or two with the idea of obtaining better information from a Medical Gentlemen of this neighbourhood - I have been disappointed - so can only now tell you my experience of ["this" cancelled] the Square. The houses are well built on 20 feet of gravel - well drained & the whole vicinity very airy. It is not a bracing air- but I never heard of fevers prevailing - I have had nothing of the kind in my household - which has been very healthy ever since, I came here. I think it quite as ["a" cancelled] healthy a sport as any part of London. Tiburnia is said to be more bracing - but it is cold being on clay - the only part of the town I Should prefer as more bracing is Kensington Gore - but that is scarcely London. I hope you will not think that I take too great a liberty in sending the enclosed account of our hospital in which I take great interest. It is a most excellent institution - carried on by Medical gentlemen atuitous - with a humanity a a skill & a sedulous attention quite unequalled - nor do they seek remuneration they only anxiously deplore that the funds are so very low. I know that you are a munificent patron of["ch” cancelled] several charitable institutions - that very circumstance may disable you from extending relief to any other - but we should be very thankful for even a small donation. Pray excuse this liberty & believe me Very truly yours Mary Shelley 2h Chester Sq. 18 April
