Dear Mr. Todd:

owing to my"age and infirmity“ and other
troubles, I have been unable until to~day to thank
you for your remembrance,as evidenced in your note re-
ceived some Weeks ago.

’You speak of having been discouraged in your
attenpt to get so far uptown as my rooms on the corner
of 100th Street and Broadway. Let me say that I
really came here owing to the convenience of our new
rapid transit. The Broadway gzggegg trains on the
subway reach here from the 42nd Street Grand Central
Station -“that is they reach 96th Street -uin eight
minutes with only one stop, and the ordinary way-
trains take only a few minutes more. It is very easy
to reach thisspot from any point this side of Wall St.
You must have tried to cover the length of Manhattan
in a surface car, but New Yorkers now use the trolley
‘Only for short trips, shopping, etc.

I am glad to know you are getting on so Well
with your literary work, and wish I could say the same
of my own. The succeesive deaths in my family and
Jny own illnesses have kept me from my desk. I sup- -
pose the manner in which your town of Rediiig has

"boomed"of late years is largely due to your own skill-
ful efforts. Many of my friends speak to me about it,
and perhaps I may yet live to pass a night at the
village inn. That institution should feel grateful to
you for your letters in its,keha1f.'

Sincerely your9,'
