Thank you for your letter about 'The Daily News.’
I am much obliged to you for mentioning my name, and think I
could prohahly do the articles. But would the editor suggest
subjects and definitely commission the articles? Or would he
commission them on subjects proposed by myself and approved by
him? I should not like to write articles of this kind. 'on spec.‘
You, having seen him, and haVing named me, will know what his
attitude is. Regarding the 'squibs,’ I think our coming hol-
iday might supply gone notions for these, and I should have no
objection to writing them without a commission. For the longer
things, if I ah to propose subjects, would the editor ¢1ve me
some notion of the scope Within which I ought to work°
