Dear Mr. Fallen

I returned to Davas a few days ago. On looking
through some loose papers, I found today the copy
of a Christmas Lullaby wh. I promised to send you.
I fear it is hardly worth your acceptance.

If you do not use it, please let me have it again.

Chatto & Winders are going to publish the little
book on Medieval Student Songs, of uh. I told you.
I have translated 60 of these curious comositions.
I have been much interested in the work, &. shall
be inquisitive as to the impression it makes on
scholars like yourself. When it appears, I will
send you a copy.

After completing that & getting a new vol.of
sonnets into order for the press, I began to read
through Beaumont & Fletcher again, having
providently put Dyce's Edition in 1; vols

into one of my postmanteaus.

I feel as though I had a thousand things to ask you
about them. I have read about two thirds: curiously
enough, with an augmented sense of their excellence.

Could you tell me what are the most important
critical essays to read upon them ? Of course

I have Macaulay. Is there not a good quarterly
article of recent date ? Is Swin[burne] in

Eve B:r‘it worth trying to get ? Darley's Introduction
I remember, but not distinctly.

I go with Macaulay on the general lines of his
conclusions. But I have not had him with me on this
journey, & therefore have been unable to follow his
minute assignments of act 8: scene to one or to the
other.

Tell me about what you think about the authorship

 

 of the Honest Man's Fortune? I felt that only
Act V was Fletcher's; &. I have a notion that
whoever wrote the first L1 Acts, intended
Veramour; to turn out a woman. Vex-amour is
exceedingly in Beaumont’s style.

I am rather ill. The change from Italy to
Switzerland always tries me; & I caught a
cold on that majestically beautiful but
elimatically disagreeable mountain the
Mont Generoso. I left two daughters in a
delicate state of health on the Southern
side, alas 1 The one consumptive, the
other exhausted by typhoid.

we quarter is that of an heiress of a branch

of Millington, 8c the same as he sealed Charles’
