Ilis father came to Baltimore in 1797, and d. 1802. Ile rec'eivcd from his mother his poetic talent and his edu- cation. In 1803 he remorcd to Augusta, (la. \Vas adm. to the bar in Mar. 1800; soon rose to the head of the profession; became any-gen. of the State; M.C. in 1815—17, 1524—5, and in 1827—35; and was disting. as an orator. Ile Visited Europe in 1835~40, and on his return devoted himself to literature, politics, and the law. \Vhile in Florence, he discoVered some documents concerning Dante, and also an original painting of the great poet on the wall of the Chapel of Bargetto. He left a MS. vol. of the poet’s life. Author of “ The Love, Mad- ness, and Imprisonment of ’I‘asso,” 2 vols. 1842, and“ lIesperia ; ” wrote for the Soul/tern Review an article on l’etrareh; and contrib. to the illag'azines. 19101111843 to his d. he was prof. of law in the U. of La. at New Orleans. Ilis literary productions are numerous, and hear the impress of a gifted and highly educat- ed mind. ()ne of his lyrics, entitlet “ My Life is like a Summer Rose,” received the praise of Lord Byron.
