family, \\ ich is one of the oldest and most
eminent in Calcutta; one (I. Educ. : Calcutta
Hindu College, completing his education at
home, under the private tuition of Captain D. L.
Richardson, the Rev. Dr. Nash, and other
European instructors. Fellow of the Calcutta.
University; member of the Syndicate and of
the Faculty of Arts, Calcutta University. Was
a M.L.C. Bengal, 1870-, President of British
Indian Association, 1871 and 1891 ; of the Syndi-
cate of Calcutta University, 1881 ; of the Faculty
of Arts, 1882; and of Councilof Asiatic Society,
1882 ; appointed member of the Supreme Legis—
lative Council 01' India, 1877, and was reap-
pointed 1879 and 1881; was a J.1’. of Calcutta,
a Trustee of imperial Indian Museum; is a
Gov ruor of Mayo Hospital, and a member of
Connnittee, and one of the Trustees of the
Central Durl'erin Fund; appointed a mem-
ber of the Education Commission, 18

sion, 1893; granted title of Raja Bahadur,
1871, and Muhaiaja Baliailur, 1890; title
