  WnAiiION, Thomas, Marquis of, an English
statesman, who became a prominent; member
of the Whig party, and, with his father, “as
the first who went over to the cause of William
111., on his landing in 1688. He VHS soon
at'ter\‘.':1rtls nominated eomptrollerot' the house-
hold, and nmembcr ot‘ the privy council. In
the reign of Anne, and during the ascendancy
of the Tory ministry, he was in opposition; but.
after his party obtained power, he was employed
as one of the commissioners that settled the
treaty of union with Scotland. He was sub-
sequently appointed lord-lieutenmit ot' lreiund.
After the accession ot‘Gcorge l. to the throne, he
became lord privy seal, and received the title of
Marquis of Wharton. lie was known amongst;
his own part ' as “Honest Tom Wharton.” lie
is stated to have been the author of the famous
political ballad called “ Lillibullero.” 1!. about;
164-0; D. in London, 1715.
