YOUNG, Arthur, an eminent write: upon :1ng-
culture, was intended for a literehant, but
having no taste for mercantile pursuits, after
the death of his father he started a periodical
called the “ Universal Museum," which was
discontinued at the sixth number. He next
devoted himself to the management of a small
farm belonging to his mother, and in 1765
commenced writing upon agriculture. Two
years later he entered upon the management
of a larger farm, and, in consequence of the
experiments he carried out therein, was en-
abled L0 produce in 1770 his “ Course of Ex-
perimental Agriculture," one of the first works
of any importance upon agriculture published
in this country. He then proceeded to make
tours of observation through England, pub-
lishing his experience in works which were
translated and read in France, Russia. and
other continental countries, almost immediately
after their appearance in England. He like~
wise travelled through France, and produced
an ”Agricultural Survey” of that country,
which materially contributed to the improvement
of the arts of husbandry there. About r793 he
bought 4.100 acres of waste land in Yorkshire, for
the purpose of carrying out his scheme for
the improvement of uncultivated soil. He also
became secretary of the Board of Agriculture.
His principal works were, ” Six \Veeks’ 'l‘i‘ur
through the Southern Counties of England,"
“ Tour through the Northern Counties," “ Poli-
tical Arithmetic," “The Annals of Agricul-
ture," of which he published 45 volumes; and
some political pamphlets. In 180]: the French
Directory ordered a French translation ofall
his agricultural works to be made. This work

was produced in Paris, under the title of “ Le
' Cultivateur Anglais.” 11.174: ; D. 1820.
