ER 8., the son of the eminent en-
g1aver Mr. George Cooke, was born

in London, in 1811. For a short time
he studied architecture under the
elder Pugin. His earlier efforts were
illustrations to botanical works,
“ London’s Encyclopeedia,” “Loddiges’
Botanical Cabinet,” &c. His first
publication was “ Shipping and Craft,”
for which he drew and etched fifty
plates; and then drew and engraved
twelve large plates of Cd and New
London Bridges, published in one
yolume ; after which he took to paint-
mg. Mr. Cooke’s first works were
coast and Dutch subjects, large rough
ea and marine views,—having visited

coast of Italy, fiom Marseilles to
Piestum, including Flownce and
Rome. After visiting Scandinavia, he
commenced a se1 ies of visits to Venice,
and painted a laige number of the
piincipal building: and the lagune.
These were succeeded by wo1ks on a
large scale, of scenes in Spain and
Morocco- 5 one large work of the latter
class appeared 1n the Exhibition of
the Royal Academy for 1864 He
was elected ARA. in 1850, R.A.
in 1863, and in the same year a
Fellow of the.Royal Society, and is a
Fellow of the Linnean, Zoological,
Geographical, and Geological Socie-
ties, of the Alpine Club, and the
Architectural Museum. 5
