Buckingham, James Silk (b. 1786, (I.
1355), traveller and politician“ after an
adventurous life went to India, and, es-
tablished a newspaper in Calcutta, which
was suppressed by the East India Company.
Returning to England he lectured against
the company’s monopoly. and his losses
were made good by public subscriptions.
He established the Athenmmn and wrote
many books of travel, and from 1332 to
1837 sat for Sheffield in Parliament.
