The second poem is probably to Ann

married to Robert Merry. Wranghan pub-

lished the poems in 1795. The letter

has not been published, but is to be

7797 Wordsworth, William C. $40.00
A.l.s., Harrow, may 22 [1839}, to
the Reverend w. K. (Walter Kerr)
Hamilton of Merton College, Oxford.
Double sheet of letter paper, 3 7/8
x 7 1/4, with black edges and black
wax. 3 1/2 pages with address on last
page. The letter mentiono the Poet's
nephews, Charles and Christopher, the
latter's wife, Lady Davy, and Mrs.
Fisher. The letter was written in
1339 and the visit to Oxford was to
receive the honorary degree, D.C.L.,
conferred on the Poet in that year.
Another confirmation of the date is
the reference to the blow "poor dear
Charles" "has had". Mrs. Charles
Wordsworth had died May 10, 1839,
twelve days before. The mourning yaper
is probably in remembrance of her. The
Bishop of Salisbury referred to in the
letter was Edward Denison. Walter Kerr
Hamilton, at the date of the letter,
was a fellow of Merton College, Oxford,
and Vicar of St. Peters-In-The~East,
Oxford. Hamilton, who was a protege of
Denison, became Bish0p of Salisbury in
1354. The friendship with Hamilton may
have originally arisen because of their
mutual friendship with the Arnaldo,
Thomas and Matthew. Lady Davy was the
widow of Sir Humphrey Davy, the famous
sciontist. Lady Davy's sister-in~1aw,
Hrs. John Davy, was a close friend of
Wordsworth‘s. She was margaret Fletcher,
daughter of Archibald and Eliza Fletcher.

At the time the letter was written
Wordsworth was visiting the Christopher
Wordsworths. 0J3. was then headmaster
of Harrow. The Mrs. Fisher, who appar-
ently resided at Salisbury, may have
been the widow of John Fisher, former
BishOp of Salisbury. An engraved por-
trait accompanies this letter. The
letter was sent to Salisbury under
cover to the Bishop, with whom Hamilton
was presumably staying.
