Dear

Myero & Comoany, fiookgellero of London, has informed
me of your request for a cepy of Charles Lamb's letter to
Br. Chambers, bought by Myerg for me at Sothooy'g last
summor, and 1 toga pleasmra in enclosing a photocopy.

As tho copy did nos turn out too weli I shal1 be glad to
try again if you find any difficulty in dooiphering it.
I am glad to £0 this because 1 have been under unac~
knowlefigod ok1igationg to you for your interesting article

on tho Lucas text of tho Lamb letters in the Huntington
Lifirary Quorterlj. I myoolf have found the Lucas text very
inadequate in many reopeats w which is not to say, however,
that Lucas did not maio a tramendous Pontrihution in the
Elian field.

Myers has also told me that you are engaged in a work
about Lamb. 1 hava tho following original letters (the
numbers heing those assigned in the Lucas edition):

30, 66, 73, 193 272, 275, 300, 319, 326, 343, 375, 339,
395, 400, 448, 1,“, 4%5, 51%, 518,53Q, 5&2, 639, 64g,

753, 754, 756, 785, 802, 825, 837, 339, 846, 352,
911, 949, 973, "- 1014, 1015 and 1018. Also the
following which are not in Lucas (all C. Lamb):

To George Dale, circa 1805; to M35. John Dyer Collier
(Hutton Gérden) M.B.; to Miss F. manning, June #, 1313;
to T. Allsop, October 19, 1821; to B. Booth, April 15,

i regret very much to tell you that l do ooE have the
Dodwell and Chambers letter n or any letter to either John
‘Chemoers or Dodwell. I did bid on the lodwwwl and Cheibnoer3
letter last summer, but it broub.t aombtlwdb in e1ccess of
$480, which was begohd my purse. The 3e lhad from
Myers e Co. was handwritte en sné l toouelt C:hat the re Eeteoee
was to the letter to Dr. Chambers (which was purchased through
Myers s 80. last summer) Perhaps a fresh approach through
Myers & Co. will enable you to teach the present owner. For
what it is worth, I should tell you that there is a tumor in
the trade in New York that friends of the University of Texas
have heen the high bidders on some of the better Lamb materiel
in recent years. Perhaps an inquiry of the librarian there
might give you a lead.

The news about your projected publication is very excit-
ing, and I hOpe that the Press will bring it out regardless
E0 financial considerations. Lucas was bitter in his last years
about the small sale of the 1935 edition of the letters. It
should be remembered that the item will continue in demand for
a 2good many years. Incidentally,'1 have one little 2.crap 0f
manuscript, the miniature essay “Enough Is As Good M A Feast”;

Miss Winifred A. Myers

Dear Miss Myers:

I shall be very glad indeed to have the Lamb letter re»
ported in your letter of January 26, 1960. As a matter of
fact, I have six Lamb letters to Charles Kyle and I think
that they must be the ones referred to as having been printed
by the Oxford Eniversity Press, although I de not have a

copy of that beeko If my memory is correct, you bought these
six letters for me about two years ago, altheugh I do not have
my catalogue at hand to verify this.

I enclose my cheek i3 gayment of your last statement.

Sincerely?
