Dear Sir — or madam I am much interested to read in Nature Notes yOur reply to my query about Lizards in Ireland. It is most satisfactory to me, the more so that I date from halahide. Those sand banks opposite you, where you say green lizards have been seen by yourself, were a favourite haunt of mine, scrambling among them or galloping along the sands - fifty or sixty years ago. They belonged to my father, Charles Cobbe of Newbridge, who died in 1857; and it was in our park (across the slope) that I found the large brown lizard of which I Spoke to Darwin. He was not at all making a jesting reference to St. Patrick, but very gravely asserting that there were .no such lizards either in Ireland or in this part of Europe, & that the apnearance of one was little short of miraculous & would have to be accounted for by some singular incident of transport or escape. "e knew me very well a believed me implicitly but did not think other naturalists who did not, personally know me wd be inclined to do so! What a lesson of the fallibility of the greatest a most honored men of science: Pray excuse this long letter & accept my thanks for your kindness in replying to my question Sincerely yrs Frances Power Cobbe It is very odd that I never saw or heard of any other lizard in the country beside that brown one.
