House No. 2% at Burton has been vacant since mid—
January of this year. While it is in a desirable
location the objection to the house seems to be
that it has only three rooms and a number of people
to whom it has been offered have rejected it for
this reason.
Since tw0 of our tenants, Enoch Hatfield and Charles
McPeek whom we had on our schedule for room addi—
tions and bathrooms under Special Appropriation No.
1003, have now been canceled from that program due
to their failure to sign the new lease form, I think
it would be advisable to use part of the money al-
loted to their houses for building an extra room to
house No. 2%.
You may definitely add the building of an extra
room to house No. 2b to the program under Special
Appropriation No. 1003.
You should immediately estimate the cost of the '
addition so that We can establish the rent increase
allowing Creed Oney to advise any applicants for
the house the total amount of the rent after the
addition has been completed. Since underpinning
involves‘rent increase an estimate of the cost of
the underpinning should be included as an item of
the overall cost of the improvement.

- In v ' fact that the rehabilitation of some of
these uni s would be so costly it would appear to us that
probably the best thing to do at the present time would be
to board up the houses and wait until later in the fall to
make a final decision on the matter. It has been our ex-
perience that during the summer months quite a number of .
people who are interested in a house will not move into
Wheelwright due to the fact that they already have gardens
planted at their present locations and it is too late in

the year for them to plant another. Possibly by fall
we will be able to find tenants for a number of these
houses, although as you can see by the estimated cost
of rehabilitation some of the houses are in a bad state
of repair.
I recommend that houses Nos. 265, 255, 238, 86 and 323
be reconditioned at the present time and that the other
houses be boarded up until a later date at 'uch time
we will determine what to do with them unde he cir-
cumstances existing at that time. To rehab -tate these
five houses will run into a substantial amo of money
and if you feel we should proceed at the ba- of doing
this work at the present time a de '- .. - Id be made
