Attention of Mr. L. S. Becker, Supt.:
Gentlemen:
In reply to your letter of the 4th, relative
‘ shipment of your order No. 19604.
This was shipped from our Columbus factory on
‘ February 27th, by Merchants Dispatch and transferred to
Pinson Transfer on March 5rd. On checking with Pinson
Transfer we find that their trucks have been unable to
operate due to the weather in the last few days, so
therefor the reason for the delay. 7
1 Trust you will have received the shipment by
the time this letter reaches you as the trucks should be
able to operate by that time.
Very truly yours,

Attention: Lr. J. 3. Lahan
leer Sir:
- #0 he e carefully considered your letter of
December 9th and believe that the following information is
correct and regrescnts, as far as we are able to determine,
just whai the future holds for the tyge of material you will
need.
st imescnt we see no reason for a fossible
shortace of the necessary raw material Eor outside house gaint.
noneter, a shortage in containers is already existing and is
» becoming more acute as tine goes on. To overcone this to some
extent me are charging the customer yl.00 apiece for seed
five—gall n container, so that we are certain they are returned.
somever, we believe our biggest giffioulty will
be that of transportation. 1e are exgcrienoing serious delays in
shi1ments at yresert and we do not gnew how bad this situation
will be by spring.
“e suggest that you go ahead tith your ylsns of
iaintiny, so that you can giVe us sufficient advance notice in
order that we may be able to get the merchandise to you in plenty
of {I‘LTHOO
Yours very trulv,

I Causes of pamt fatlure

' In a general way the most important reasons for paint failure are:
1 1. Delaying painting or repairs beyond the danger point.

. 2. M oistare back of paint film.

, 3. Faultyconstractiom.
' " 4. Cheap paint.

5. Faulty application.
i Delaying repainting or repairing
beyond danger point
Q One of the many ugly scars left by the depression to record its
: presence amongst us is an amazing number of paint—neglected and
E repair-neglected buildings. (Fig. 1.) Structures that should have
E been cared for five years ago are still waiting for paint and repair
. protection.
Such neglect frequently results in cracks in siding and open nail
holes, both of which, during rainy weather, offer easy entrance to
moisture. After penetrating to the back of the siding, such moisture
is eventually drawn to the surface by the action of the sun. There it
causes the paint surface to blister and finally peel. (Fig. 2.)
Representatives should make owners of neglected homes realize
the folly of spending money for paint \_
until necessary repairs have been RM
made. By such a course of action »5. it»; 1‘ ‘

 -‘ Moisture
'3 Moisture causes more paint failures than all other factors combined. .
For this reason, in every case where it is known to exist, a concerted
effort should be made to locate its source and to make necessary re- ‘
pairs before painting is undertaken. .
3 When moisture has collected behind a paint film the sun will gradu- ,
‘- ally draw it to the surface. Under pressure from this moisture, the
l 7 paint film will expand to a certain point, then break, allowing the water
. to escape. As it dries, the paint film will slowly crack and peel. Or, '
:' the water may finally dry out of the blister and although the film
.3 remains intact, it has lost its adhesion to the surface and eventually
-' becomes brittle and flakes off.
"3' Following are just a few of the deficiencies which frequently allow
., moisture to collect and gain entrance:
1. Cracks and nail holes in siding. (Fig. 3.)
2. Gaps between siding and corner boards, casing of doors and windows.
3,; (Fig. 2.)
'- 3. Faulty fiashings around chimneys, on top of doors and windows, or Where
.‘., porch roofs or dormers are attached to the house proper. (Fig. 1.».
4. Wet siding before paint is appliedfidue to rain, frost, or inadequate venti—
lation during plastering at time of building’s erection.
5. Leaky and sweating pipes. (Fig. 5.3
6. Excessive humidity in atticfidue to improper ventilation or faulty con~
struction in basement which permits moisture to travel up through the
i house to the attic.
‘ Faulty Construction
3 The sources of moisture enumerated above are mostly due to faulty
construction. No paint, regardless of its quality, will give service
unless the sources of moisture are located and repaired.
. Houses built cheaply and quickly often have these structural
' defects (see Figs. 6 and 7) and, unfortunately, their owners, lacking
: knowledge of paint, wrongly assume that the paint must be at fault.
By correcting the structural defects wherever possible, home owners
may avoid much heavier repair expense later which would result if
. moisture were permitted to seep in to cause rot and decay. Many rep-

resentatives have re orted that the generall complete an investiga-
p y Y
tion of paint failure, where the cause of the trouble was moisture, by
selling Glaz-Kalk for sealing up the many troublesome places.
Cheap paint
There is a wide variation in the composition of cheap paints, both 5
in the pigment and vehicle content. While it isn’t our purpose to
describe here each type, it should be understood that early paint fail— 5.,
ure is certain to result, even on buildings otherwise perfect, if a cheap
paint has been used. The failure may be in the form of rapid chalk—
ing, checking, peeling, cracking or splitting of the paint film. The form
C
of the failure is dependent on the formulation of the particular cheap
paint used. (Figs. 8 and 9).
, . .
Faulty application
Probably the most common example of faulty application is im-
proper thinning of the paint to take care of the porosity of the surface.
This is often due to a lack of appreciation 0n the user’s part of the
importance of properly preparing the surface for the finishing coat.
