 Memorandum of Meeting
of G. F. Leatherman, R. I. McKinney and Joe Teraino
in McKinney's Office on 2/22/61
Regarding Heaters
Our discussion disclosed that in the past it has been found that heaters
have been tampered with by unauthorized persons and even when seals have
been installed they have been ignored and broken. The reason for a large
amount of the tampering has been to wire the units so that the fans alone
could be operated for ventilating in the summer weather. The settings of
the gas pressure regulators have also been changed at times to deliver more
gas to the combustion chamber. This practice causes overheating of the com-
bustion chamber and premature failures. It is thought that this might have
come about because of insufficient heating capacity to satisfy the workmen
and because management would not provide additional Capacity
It was agreed that top management should issue instructions to those con-
cerned with shops (other than Wheelwright, where a good maintenance system
is in effect) that no one other than authorized maintenance men should adjust.
change, or repair any heating unit or heating unit accessory. If servicing
is required, men should be notified to report promptly to the Buildings and
Grounds Department.
It was brought out that the Buildings & Grounds )epartment makes a thorough
annual check of all heating units, including cleaning of combustion chambers,
adjusting flames and regulators, lubricating of motors and checking or re-
pairing thermostats. The Buildings & Grounds Department will add to their
maintenance schedule a semi-annual lubrication of fan motors only, because
of summer operation of the fans for ventilation.
The Power & Mechanical Department will install switches on heaters as neces-
sary to make possible the operation of the fans only, during warm weather, by
merely throwing the switch.
A check is to be made to determine if the heaters in the Arnold Fork change
room can be lubricated without removing unit.
I am to talk to Hunter Thomas, Hobart Smith and Bob Grimm about their heating
systems in general.
I shOuld have a report of progress made in this connection or any further
pertinent information each month.
