PLANTING INFORMATION
Locust, Black — Grows throughout State in all types of soil except swamps and hard-
pan. widely planted to control erosion and rebuild worn-out soil. Its extremely ‘
durable wood is used for fence posts, mine timbers, etc. For erosion control, ‘
plant 4 x 4 feet apart, or closer; for production of posts, plant 6 X 6 feet
spurt. GrOWS rapidly on good soils having a limestone base or composition. ‘
Maple, Hard (Sugar Tree) — Common throughout Kentucky where it is often called
sugar tree. Used in the manufacture of flooring, furniture, shoe-lasts, and a '
great variety of novelties. Known commercially as hard maple. Plant 6 X 6 feet
apart. * ‘ - . .
Oak, Red - GroWs throughout the State; prefers rich, moist, (not swampy)‘soils.
753E’EEEH for cooperage, interior finish, construction, furniture, and cross-ties.
Fairly rapid grower. Plant 9 x 6 feet apart.
Oak, Yhite - Grows throughout Kentucky and on a variety of soils; provides one of
most useifiltand valuable woods. Uses: shipbuilding, furniture, tight coopcruge,
flooring, wagons, interior finish, implements. Plant 6 x 5 feet apart. ‘
Pine, Loblolly - Introduced to Kentucky from southern states; grows rapidly in acid
E3?TET“VBBE’E§ used for lumber for general construction, interior and exterior ” '
finish,.and for paper pulp, poles, and fuel. Plant 6 x 6 feet apart. Sone loblolly-
pine plantations in Kentucky suifered damage by freezing during the extremely se—
vere winters of 1955-56 and 1939—40. Howevar, those plantations which were pro—
tected from north Winds by adjacent woodlands or other Windbrcuks suffered little
damage. This tree can be planted on soils too poor to grow locust.
‘ k
Fine, Pitch - Grows on dry ridges and slopes and in cold swamps and bottoms in the
mountains and outlying hilly regions. Occurs mixed with hardwoods or other pine.
Common in eastern Kentucky. Uses: general construction, also used as fuel and
pulpwood. The tree grows on very poor soil and has sprouting ability when young.
Plant 6 x 6 feet apart. I ,
Pine, Scrub é Widely distributed and common oVer the eastern and central parts of
the State. Often occurs in pure stands and is very persistent in gullying and dry
fields. Slow growth. Wood is very knotty, light and soft but fairly durable in
contact w ith the soil. Uses: paper pulp, firewood, posts, poles and piling. ‘
Good for erosion control on soils too poor to grow locust. Plant 4 x 4 feet for
erosion control and 6 x 6 feet apart for timber production.
Pine, shortleaf — Native to eastern Kentucky. Grows on poor soil on dry ridges
and slopes, often mixed with pitch pine. Wood is superior to pitch pine, and is
used for interior and exterior finish, general construction, paper pulp, exelsior,
cooperage, mine props, etc. On acid soils where top soil is gone, this species
may be used instead of black locust to control erosion. Plant 4 x 4 feet apart
for erosion control or 6 X 6 feet for timber production. fairly rapid growth.

 PLANTING iNFORMATIOJ (Cont'd)
Pine, White - Occurs naturally throughout mountainous lands of eastern Kentucky;
will grow on high, dry, sandy and rocky ridges and slopes, but prefer: cooler and
more moist situations. Growth is rapid. "bod is much in demand for construction
purposes, interior trim, box boards, matches, wood carving and pattern making,
and many other products. Plant 6 x 6 feet apart. .
Walnut, Black - Is one of our most valuable trees. Requires fertile soil, moist
but well drained. Should not be planted on badly eroded or worn-out land. It is
a rapid grower under food conditions. Highly prized for veneer, furniture and '
cabinet work,.gun-stocks, airplane propellers, etc. Its delicious nuts are Widely
used in cakes, candies, and other confections. Seedlings should be planted 8 x 8
feet apart. ‘

PLANTING AND CARE OF TREQE
General — In setting out seedlin s, the planting holes may be dug with a spade or
grub hoe. They should be large enough to accommodate the roots of the seedling, '
without bending or crowding. If planted on level or gently sloping ground, the
trees may be set in furrows plowed with the contour of the land. Plow the fur—
rows six or eight feet apart, and set the trees six or eight feet apart in the fur-
rows, depending on the desired spacing. Plow deep furrows so the roots of th:
seedling may.be covered sufficiently. Seedlings should be covered about one-half
inch above the collar (ground line) and the soil pressed down firmly around them.

Extreme care should be taken to prevent the roots from drying out while
planting, especially with pine seedlings. Keep the roots immersed in muddy water
or COVerud with wet burlap, moss, or leaves.

Cultivation during the first two grouing seasons will greatly help the '
plantation. Grazing animals and fire should be kcpt out at all times.

The Black walnut seed (nuts) shovn on the price list will be available ’
in the spring only, about March 1. They will be stratified during the winter and,
when shipped, will be ready for planting, and must be planted immediately upon
receipt. Do not allow them to dry out. Plant the nuts where you want the tree to
grow. Y‘fith a hoe or mattock, strip the sod from an area at least 15 inches square,
and dig a hole in the center two to four inchts dccp. Plant one or two nuts in the
hole, fill and trmnp down the dirt. The nuts should germinate within two to three
weeks after sowing. ‘ l
