SPECIFICATIONS FOR CARPENTER SHOP
. ' BUILDING IN WHEELWRIGHTa KY. .
, l.) Excavation
. a.) All excavation shall be made to the proper _
depth as indicated on the arawings with proper
allOWance for floor slabs, forms, etc. Bottom
of footer excavatious shall be approximately
level, clean, and clear of loose material.
b.) If excavations for footers are carried below
the elevation shown on drawings, back filling-
I slell be done with a lean cinder coucrete or
with regular concrete.
c.) Where rootinss are poured without forms, trench
sides shall be sharp and true.
2.) Back Filling
3.) Fill materiel placed under floor slabs shall be
placed in layers not over 6" deep and well tamped
so tnet floor slab will not settle. Fill must be
' made of fine material. Large rock, brick or
material with large voids will not be acceptable ‘
within the building area.
3.) Grading V ‘
a.) Floor slabs shall not be poured until all settle-
ment has occurred and not until ground has been
leveled and accurately graded. ' '
b.) All exterior grades shall conform to the contours
shown on drawings.
‘ h.) Concrete Work fl
a.) Cement shall be goofl grade Portland cement.
b.) Sand shall be clean, hard, sharp material washed
. free of clay.

 c.) Reinforcement shall be accurately positioned as
indicated on plans and secured against displacement.
d.) Inserts, anchors, ties shall be securely placed
before pouring as indicated on plans.
I e.) The concrete mix shall be 1:2:h with no more than '
6 gallons of water per bag of cement used. Allov-
. ence in free water shall be made when aggregates
‘ are wet. The concrete mix shall be in the mixer
at least 1% minutes or until all ingredients are
uniformly distributed.
f.) Formwork shall be well constructed and firmly
braced against diaplacement or deflection and
built to accurate dimension.
d g.) Concrete must be placed within #5 minutes after
mixing or wasted. Retempering will not be per-
mitted. ,
h.) Floor finishes shall be brought to a true, even sur-
face. Floors shall be floated with a wood float and
then twice trowelled until all irregularities,
trowel marks, etc. are out and all corners and edges
neatly finished. Sprinkling with dry cement will
not be permitted. Outside pads shall have a brush
finish. V
1.) Concrete slabs must be kept damp and covered for
at least one week after pouring to properly cure.
3.) Inside slabs shall be painted with 3 coats of
»- "Lipidolith" floor hardener, applied in strict ‘
accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
(5.) glock Work L/’
a.) Cinder blocks manufactured by the General Shale
Products Company of Kingspert, Tennessee shall be M
‘ ‘ used and these shall conform to the standard

 specifications of the A.S.T.M., 090~52. Grade
A blocks shall be used in the rear wall and
grade B blocks may be used elsewhere. -
b.) Blocks must be laid to accurate dimension and
{b true to_alignmens and in adequate mortar beds.

c.) Mortar shall consist of 1 part brixment and not I
more than 3 parts sand.

d.) No blocks with cracks, or chipped places shall be
used in a wall where these flaws will be visible.

e.) Dur-OaWall reinforcement of No. 9 wire and sized
for 8 and 12 inch block as manufactured by Cedar
Rapids Block Company, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, shall be
used in all walls as indicated in plans.

. f.) Blocks shall be cleaned and neatly pointed and all
nail holes filled. ,
g.) Cutting of blocks shall be done with a masonry saw.
6.) Brick Work 4,/

a.) Face brick as manufactured by the General Shale
Products Corporation of Kingsport, Tennessee shall
be used.

b.) No chipped or damaged brick shall be exposed to View.

c.) Mortar shall consist of one part brixment and not

. _ ' more than 3 parts sand.

d.) Brick work shall be laid true to dimensions, plumb,
Square and in bond. All courses shall be level
with Joints of uniform width.

e.) Brick shall be thoroughly cleaned and pointed. In
extreme cases, a 5% solution of muriatic acid may
be used, but this shall be preceded and followed
by a copious bath of clean water.

f.) The tops of walls shall be protected at night,
during inclement weather or during delays in the
work.

 g.) All brick shall be laid in a full bed and head

' >447.) Stone Work , v '
<\ a.) Indiana limestone window sills shall be used as
» shown on plans. - V
b.) Stone shall be vetted before setting and set in V
full_mortar joints, level and true to alignment.
Exposed faces shall be kept free of mortar at all
times.
c.) Proper protection shall be provided over stone
c.,r work during construction period.
8.) Structural Steel
a.) All workmanship on structural members be in
' accordance with best practices in the trade.
b.) Detailed shop drawings of all steel shall be _
prepared by the fabricator and submitted to
Inland's engineer for approval before fabrication. .
c.) Steel shall have one shop coat of red lead.
d.) Steelwork shall be accurately aligned, plumbed,
leveled and firmly anchored in Walls with an
approved type wall anchor.
e.) Where loads ere concentrated on walls, the two
block courses immediately below shall be filled
with concrete so as to spread the load at 60° to
the horicontal.
f.) The cross brace rods over the driveway must not
be tightened until after the metal deck has been
tack welded in place. Then the rods should be
tightened only until snug and firm and Opposite
rods should be tightened evenly. The rods should
be supported to the decking if necessary to relieve
sag. _

 g.) The T~Cbord joists over the carpenter shop
shall be as manufactured by Haven-Busch
Company of Grand Rapids h, Michigan.
' 9.) Metal Decking _
' a.) Metal decking shall be of the section indicated
, on plans and manufactured by the H. H. Robertson
Company. Inquiries may be directed to their office
. at 2350 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati, Ohio. Plans
of our Job have been furnished them by us. .
d b.) Metal decking shall be tack welded to supporting
structural steel on about 12" centers and tack
welded longitudinally between sheets to make the
decking as rigid as possible. . _
c.) Decking shall be installed in accordance with
best practice and specifications of the H. H.
Robertson Company.
- d.) End closures shall be installed where indicated on
prints.
e.) A good grade of metal bond aluminum paint is to
be used to touch up both sides of decking at
points of welding.
I 10.) Roofing and Sheet Metal
s.) Roof shall consist of a bonded 20 year built up
slag roof.
b.) Flashing shall be 20 oz. copper.
c.) Insulation board shall be 25/32" Celotex with
vapor seal and mapped down to deck.
d.) Framing for coping fascia shall be done with
treated lumber as shown on plans. Aluminum
fascia will be purchased and applied by others
when building is prepared to receive it.
e.) Guttering shall be of 6 inch 16 02. copper and
downspouts shall be h"x5" corrugated 16 02. copper.

 f.) Gutters shall be securely fastened to a treated
wood nailer member and down5pouts shall be anchored
about every 6 to 8 feet.

' ll.) gindows and Doors I

QE a.) All hinged doors will be Fenestra hollow metal
panel doors as manufactured by Detroit Steel
Products Company and sold by Minter Homes Corpo-
ration of Huntington, W. Va. They shall be in-
stalled with metal frames and properly caulked.

, b.) The exterior hinged doors shall be type G-2 and

the interior hinged doors shall be type M.

c.) Hinged doors to be equipped with knobs, cylinder
lock, spring bolt and dead bolt, Fenestra No. 1979.
Toilet door to be equipped with knob and spring

I bolt only, without lock, Fenestra No. 1980. Stops
shall be installed for all hinged doors.

d.) 411 door locks are to be master keyed in the same -
series.

9.) Sliding doors shall be wood panel as specified on
quotation from Minter Homes Corporation of Huntington,
West Virginia, copy or which is attached hereto.

f.) For 16' wide sliding doors use hardware set 2028é-1,
with No. 82 binder and metal astragal, as sold by
Richards-Wilcox of 511 Provident Bank Building,
Cincinnati 2, Ohio. For smaller interior sliding
doors use hardware sets lOZTé-l with No. 272 and
stop.

g.) All outside windows are to be Fenestra steel windows
of the commercial projected type except the windows
in the Electrical Shop, Plumbing Shop and Plumbing
Storage Room which are to be the pivoted type. The
pivoted type windows shall be equipped with spring

 , catch No. 25 and chain operated from floor.
h.) Windows shall be properly aligned and anchored
~ and caulked outside with mastic caulking compound.
i.) Metal windows and doors shall have two coats of
best quality paint in color to be selected. Wooden
doors shall have three coats of paint.
J.) lhe window between the office and carpenter shop
shall be aluminum as specified on plans and as
sold by Minter Homes Corporation.
‘ k.) Aklo glass shall be used in all windows in the
I West elevation (along road), same as in Laundry h
. and Dry Cleaning building and as furnished by
Minter Homes Corporation in 1951 on our Order No.
##160. All other glass shall be D.S. grade A
clear.
12.) Painting h
a.) Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company best quality paints
or equal shall be used throughout.
b.) Windows and metal doors to have 2 coats of paint
of color to be selected.
c.) Wooden doors to have 3 coats of paint. I
d.) Metal decking to have 1 coat of aluminum paint
except on floor surfaces which will be unpainted.
e.) Wood window shelves to have 3 coats of clear varnish.
f.) All structural steel and hand rails to have 2 coats
'of aluminum paint. ’
13.) Acoustical Ceilings
a.) Furring strips shall be securely fastened to
metal decking on approximately 16" centers for
supporting acoustical material.

 b.) Johns Msnville acoustical board shall be used
in 16"332" size and scored to 16" squares.

c.) Borders shall be of uniform width.

_ d.) Installation shall be made in accordance with
manufacturers recommendations and when complete
all tile shall be level, accurately aligned and I
‘ clean.
14.) Plumbing and Heating Material

3.) Inland will furnish all plumbing fixtures, hot
water tank, gas meter and regulator, but con-
tractor will furnish all other material including

' heaters and piping.

b.) Plumbing and heating shall be installed under the
direct supervision of a Registered Master Plumber
and in strict comyliance with all the provisions of

' the Kentucky State Plumbing Law and Code.

c.) Drainage lines shall be laid to uniform grade and
accurate alignment and all outside drainage lines
shall be at least 2 feet under final grade.

d.) Piping shall be tested and proved to be air tight
before teing covered.

e.) Metalbestos vent pipes shall be used for heater vents.
The Claw gasteam radiators are of the nonvented type.

f.) The unit gas heaters shall be for natural gas
Operation with Minneapolis Honeywell thermostatic
control. doctors to be of sizes indicated on draw-
ings and as manufactured by Carrier Corporation and
sold torough Van Zandt Comyany of Huntington, W. Va.

5.) The gasteam radiators shall be for natural gas
operation of a size as indicated on drawings and
as manufactured by James B. Glow & Sons of 201
North Talman Avenue, Chicago 80, Illinois. These

heaters are not vented nor thermostatically
controlled.

15.) Electrical Work
'5 a.) All electrical work and light fixtures will be
furnished and installed by owner and will not be
a part of this contract.
16.) Right of Termination. Assignment and Rejection
a.) If the contractor does not carry on the work in a
diligent manner or if in the opinion of the owner
contractor is aoingdefective work, supplying de-
fective material or is in any other way neglectful
of his responsibilities under this contract or is
_ in violation of any laws; the owner, upon written
notice, may immediately terminate this contract.
b.) The contractor shall not assign this contract
either in whole or in part to any other party
without written consent from the owner.
c.) The owner may at any time reject all or any part
of the work done if, in his opinion or that of

' his representative, the work or material is defec-
tive or is not in accordance with the plans ane
specifications.

1.) The contractor may at any time request an inspec-
tion of any phase of the work.

17.) Pazment

a.) At the end of each month the contractor shall
furnish the owner with an estimate of the amount
due for work complete& and material oelivered to
that time. The owner will retain 15% of said
estimate until final acceptance of the complete&
Job.

a.) The contractor, before submitting a bid, shall
familiarize himself with ground conditions at the

' site of the proposed building and shall also
familiarize himself with the plans and specifica-

' tione.

b.) All work under this contract shall be done in
a workmanlike_manner and in accordance with the
best practices in the trade. i

I c.) Work under this contract must be started not
later than 2 weeks after contract is awarded
and contractor shall at all times provide an
adequate and competent force of men so as to
diligently pursue the work to completion.

d.) The contractor shall at all times have a congetent
foreman in supervision of the work.

\ e.) The contractor shall carry Workmen's CompensatiOn
Insurance and furnish owner with certificate of
evidence.

f.) The contractor must furnish bond covering full
cost of contract.

g.) Any extra work that may develop during the course
Of construction not covered by this contract shall
be paid for upon such terms agreed upon with the
owner at the tine.

h.) The contractor shall at all times keep the premises
reasonably free of waste material or rubbish.

1.) At the completion of the work the contractor shall
thoroughly clean the premises and remove all scaffold-
ing tools, surplus material, etc.

3.) The ground immediately surrounding the building shall
