- Biography / History
- Anne Baxter (1923-1985) was born in Michigan City, Indiana to Kenneth Stuart Baxter (1893-1977), an executive at Seagram's, and Catherine Dorothy Wright (1894-1979), daughter of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Anne began acting in school plays when she was five, and upon moving to New York a year later she continued to act; by 13, she had appeared on Broadway in Seen but Not Heard. By age 17, she had secured a contract with 20th Century Fox and appeared in her first film, 20 Mule Team, in 1940. Baxter went on to appear in multiple movies including: The Pied Piper (1942), Crash Dive (1943), The North Star (1943), and The Razor's Edge (1946) for which she won an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress. She continued to build her acting credits, appearing in Blaze of Noon (1947), Homecoming (1948), A Ticket to Tomahawk (1950), I Confess (1953), and The Ten Commandments (1956). In 1960, Baxter received a motion pictures star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In the 1960s and 1970s, Baxter worked in television and returned to Broadway, succeeding Lauren Bacall in Applause. Anne Baxter was married three times; her first marriage was to John Hodiak (1914-1955) from 1946-1953, her second was to Randolph Galt (b. 1930) from 1960-1969, and her third was to David Klee (1907-1977) in 1977. Baxter has a total of three children, Katrina Hodiak (b. 1951), Melissa Galt, and Maginel Galt. On December 4, 1985, Baxter suffered a stroke while in New York City; she remained on life support for eight days until family members agreed that brain function had ceased, passing away on December 12.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Anne Baxter papers (dated 1954-1985, undated; 0.16 cubic feet; 7 folders) comprise notes, edits, drafts, short stories, and a book that document the writing process of Anne Baxter while working on her autobiography, Intermission, in the 1960s and 1970s. The notes and drafts include Baxter's outlines for the chapters of her book, which tell a multitude of stories about her life in Australia at Giro. The book is a published copy of Baxter's autobiography, Intermission. The short stories are written by Baxter and depict relationships between friends and spouses.
- The Anne Baxter papers are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
