Collection Overview

Biography / History
Elizabeth Hardwick (1916-2007) was a Lexington born writer and literary critic. She obtained a bachelor's degree (1938) and a master's degree (1939) from the University of Kentucky before moving to New York to attend Columbia for a doctorate. Hardwick married the poet Robert Lowell in 1949; they had one child together and divorced in 1970.
With Lowell, Jason and Barbara Epstein, and Robert Silvers, Hardwick helped found The New York Review of Books in 1962 during the New York City newspaper strike. In addition to her work as a literary critic, she taught creative writing at Barnard College until 1985. As a writer her works include The Ghostly Lover (1945), The Simple Truth (1955), and Sleepless Nights (1979).
