- Biography / History
- Edward John McDermott (1852-1926) was an American politician, who served as the 31st Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky from 1911 to 1915, under Governor James B. McCreary. McDermott was born in Louisville, Kentucky and was a graduate of Harvard University. While living in Louisville, McDermott practiced as a lawyer and wrote many speeches, stories and publications on law, science, history, religion and politics. In October of 1895, McDermott married Susan Barr (1866-1938), the daughter of John Watson Barr (1826-1907) Judge of U.S. District Court for Kentucky. They had two children together, Edward John McDermott Jr. (1899-1977) and Catherine W. McDermott (1901-1981).
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Edward J. McDermott papers (dated 1855-1934, undated; 6.52 cubic feet; 14 boxes, 1 flat box) comprise speeches, publications, letters, magazines and newspaper clippings that document the political, professional and personal life of the 31st Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky, Edward J. McDermott. The letters in this collection include invitations for commencement speeches and banquets, as well as various personal letters between friends and business partners. These personal letters include details on organizations and clubs that McDermott was a part of, such as The Filson Club and The Irish National Society as well as letters to and from various reverends and lawyers. The magazine and newspaper clippings cover Edward's campaign for Lieutenant Governor and information on his family members before and after his term. The majority of the collection consists of speeches written by McDermott. The speeches cover topics such as; history, Catholicism, The Knights of Columbus, Europe, law, science, and politics.
