- Biography / History
- Fleetwood H. Sale (1868-1928) was born in Dillsboro, Indiana to James H. Sale (1843-1924) and Cordelia A. Young (1844-1892). He attended the Medical College of Ohio in Cincinnati, Ohio, graduating in 1889. Upon his graduation in 1889, he married Lillie Etta Gibbins (1870-1920) and together they had one daughter, Cordelia A. Young (1892-1947). Sale and his wife also raised a foster son, Willard L. Opp (b. 1907). In 1921, he married a second time to Amelia C. Greive (1885-1955). Sale practiced medicine in Dillsboro and the surrounding areas, and served two terms as Coroner of Dearborn County. Between 1917 and 1918, while assisting those struck with influenza, he himself contracted the disease and never fully recovered, causing him to retire from the profession by 1925.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Fleetwood H. Sale notebook (dated 1884; 0.03 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises one notebook that documents the notes and studies of Fleetwood Sale while attending the Medical College of Ohio in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1884. The notebook includes information on infectious diseases, including symptoms, severity, duration, and treatments; "Materia Medica", which details the use of specific ingredients in the treatment of a variety of ailments; and notes on human anatomy, physiology, gynecology, obstetrics, and surgery. In between sections of notes are doodles of Sale's name and his future wife's name.
- The Fleetwood H. Sale notebook collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
