~ The following review is reprinted from American Reference
Books Annual (l98H), p. SU9. ‘ V
‘ "The W. Hugh Peal Collection at the University of Kentucky." .
_ Lexington, KY, University of Kentucky Library Associates, 1982. _
e 237 p. (The Kentucky Review, Vol.N, No. l).’ · _’
This special issue ofThe Kentucky Review is devoted to an .
g extensivecatalogue raisonne of an exhibition in October 1982 of
over 200 items from the W. Hugh Peal collection at the University __
of Kentucky Library. Peal, a 1922 alumnus of the university,
V donated his collection of over lU,00O books, manuscripts, and
autograph letters to the library in l98l. Most of the collection ,
- is composed of nineteenth-.and early twentieth-century literary ~
_ materials; there are special strengths in the books and P
; _ V ` manuscripts of English Romantic writers (Peal's is one of the W ,
major collections of these writers in the United States), but»
there are also significant holdings of later British and U.S.
»writers.. Z - ` 4 m
The catalog includes an introduction by Paul A. Willis, a _
» reminiscence of Peal by Lawrence S. Thompson, an overview of the ‘ L
l major writers in the collection by John Clubbe, and a preface to
. ‘ the catalog by James D. Birchfield. John Gatton, the major
author of the text of the catalog, is to be commended for the
unpedantic erudition, clarity, and precision of his annotations
(some of the entries are charming short essays). The exhibit
. placed special emphasis on works by William Wordsworth, Samuel
Taylor Coleridge, Charles and Mary Lamb, and Robert Southey,
although selected works by other English and some U.S. writers
" are also included. ` . ‘ `
This catalog, of course, can only provide an·introduction to
jthe Peal collection. Peal did compile an accession list of the
· collection, which is available for use in the library; it is
~ possible that this list may later be indexed for easier access to
_ particular items. Libraries already subscribing to The Kentucky.
Review may want to designate this issue for their reference ·
· departments. Libraries not subscribing should purchase this
issue if they serve scholars doing original research on the
authors represented in the Peal collection.

 Service Pins
Several classified staff members have mentioned to ACTS committee
members their interest in resuming awards of service pins at five
* year intervals of lfbrary service, as done in the past. Paul
Willis has looked into the matter and has advised us that service
· pins can again be awarded on a regular basis beginning with the
next Christmas luncheon. In addition, staff members who did not
— receive pins in the intervening period will be given their awards ‘
in a ceremony planned for the near future. (Dan Hodge)_

j _ The following is another in a series of descriptive articles
€ concerning various aspects of the UK Library System. i
A Modern Political Manuscripts ‘
The Modern Political Manuscripts unit of the Special Collections
Department is responsible for collecting, processing, and
p preserving the public and private papers of prominent Kentucky
( politicians, on both state and national levels. Detailed guides
are published for each major collection to facilitate scholarly
access. Some finding guides, accession lists, and box labels are
, now being computermproduced, thanks to the recent addition of
personnel expertise in that area.

l Our holdings range from a few scrapbooks belonging to William 0.
l Bradley, the first Republican governor of Kentucky (1895-99); to
· the massive 1000 archival box collection of U.S. Senator and I
, Ambassador John Sherman Cooper. Also included are the papers of
l·= two U.S. Supreme Codrt justices, Stanley F. Reed and Fred M.
Vinson. The Morton brothers, Thruston and Rogers, both of whom
§ served as chairman of the Republican National Committee, are
represented by sizable collections. With the opening of the
”Q ~ Lawrence Wetherby collection last fall, with one exception we now
’ have the papers of every Kentucky governor for 1935 to 1959.
` Other prominent collections are those of Alben W. Barkley, Vice »
President and Senate majority leader; Earle C. Clements, Kentucky
governor and U.S. Senator; Albert B. Chandler, twice governor,
U.S. Senator, and Commissioner of Baseball; and John C. Watts,
longtime congressman from Kentucky's 6th district.
In addition to correspondence, subject and legislative files,
many political collections also include photographs, scrapbooks,
and memorabilia. Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in
the use of our collections by scholars from all parts of the ”
country, as well as from professors and students on campus.
