 i . PREFACE
The Historical Records Survey of Tennessee, in the course of its
inventories of manuscripts, early American imprints, and county, municipal,
and church archives, and through its survey of public libraries in co—
operation with the Tennessee Library Association, has as a by~product,
prepared what we believe is the most nearly complete and recent listing of
public and institutional libraries in this state. The absence of a similar
listing and the belief that such a directory would be of value to librarians
throuShout the state have resulted in the decision to issue for general
distribution a directory of public libraries, those of higher institutions
r. of learning, and of high and other secondary schools, showing the name of
R. the library or institution, its location, and the name or title of the
librarian or other person in charge.
This directory is divided into two sections, one a listing of public
and higher institutional libraries, the other a listing of high and_other
secondary school libraries. The arrangement of each listing is by counties
and alphabetically thereunder by name of the library or institution. Except
in the few instances where otherwise noted, the person listed as librarian
may be so addressed. The abbreviation "HS" means "High School."
We do not assume, of course, that this listing is complete and free
of error. It is the nature of a directory to defy completion. Much of this
directory was compiled in the winter of 1939, and many changes, particularly
in the matter of librarians, have no doubt occurred since that time; we V
shall feel that one objective in publishing this listing has been achieved
e· if it elicits corrections and further information.
