The University's probe: some
questions in need of answers

President Smgletary's order oi a
probe into “alleged irregularities
involving students and the .-\lhlt‘tlt‘>
.-\ssociatron" is. in some ways.
heartening

It serves notice that the institution
is aware that all may not be well
within its own house The t'niversity
has Inoved from outright dental oi any
taint to its athletics program to the
position that the situation Iiierrts at
least a cursory look

The choice of law professor William
Matthews and vice president Lewis
t‘ochran to head the investigation
Indicates Singletary's intentions are
serious We hope that they are. and
that this probe is not what it would
appear to be at iirst blush a ploy
armed at warding oft Investigators
irom the Slit‘ or NCAA

Both the president and his lt‘lr
vestigators‘ could go a long way
toward nipping those doubts by
cutting oil the multitude oi loose ends
dangling i'rom their examination

The public benefit

The public would ieel better. ior
instance. it it knew tor sure that Dr
('ochran‘s portion oi the probe in-
cluded a look into correspondence

any, abuse that program is open to

(it even greater value would be
some assurance that l’roi Matthew's

We teel certain that recent stories

We trust that .Mattliews will check

recent Courier-Journal at‘tlt‘le con

And Matthews would be less than
thorough it he did Iiot attempt to bird
out why Sports lniormation Director

\oIie oi this weakens our opinion
that the \t‘.\.\ should ha\e been

A disappointment

\teimd that most disappointing ior
at every turn the l iiiversity has
struck a pose ot detensiye avoidance
rather than willingness to seek out
the truth .-\nd it has invariably conic

.\Ii_\ investigation must be con

but v.3 question why ltr t'ochran
normally an accessible man should
be unobtainable tor 17 consecutive

only to deliver a quiet "no comment ‘
on the lrtth Hr why l’roi Matthews

Writers question
Kernel's coverage

Has the Kernel become a scaridel \lt"
sheet"

The recent articles on liinky McKay
seem to uphold this attitude We are not
saying that he is guilty or Iiot gurlty That
is not our purpose What is Irritating is
having to read day alter day. articles lull
oi insinuations and implications without
concrete prooi t'onsrderrng the incredible
amount oi cheating arid plagiarism that
takes place on any unru-rsrty campus, this
is no big news Item

ll McKay were not a ioottiall player, I
dart-say the articles would never have
been printed it seems the Kernel is
displaying it's aIIlaganism toward one
group on our campus under the lorce of
news coverage

There are plenty oi worthy events taking
place on campus without stooprng so low
as to become the l‘niversity of Kentucky
gossip sheet With liKl) only a week away
and the Kentucky relays. there are plenty
of stories to be had in place oi the yin
dictive heresay we have been reading

Finally. we respectiully ask the Kernel
in the tuture to give us lacls. not gossip

The 56
race:

Round 1

By JOHN Kl‘RZl-Zl.

I am writing this letter purely
as a disclosure to the student
body of this honorable institution.
It must be kept honorable; for
this reason lam one who dislikes
it very much when the student
body is being cheated behind the
scenes

I have known Jim Flegle ever
since I have entered this
I'niversity I teel he is a man of
renowned capabilities both as a
student and as a member of the
[K Debating Team I have
turthermore shared many a
speech class with Jim Flegle. For
this reason alone. perhaps one
can see the rationale behind his
running as a candidate for 8'}
President lcannot

(tn :\pt‘ll 3 Tuesday the Ad-
ministratne Process by which
one tiles tor 80 President broke
down Ah such despicable
corruption' Whereas a deadline
had been set at 3 p m that very
day tor one to tile tor candidacy.
which I must my most ot the
candidates conformed to. I
happened to notice that Jim
I'legle eiiterred the st; otttcc at
about 3 tr;

His application was not ten-
dered o\er to our beloved Vice
President Mark Paster until
about :3 to. Jim Flegle managed
to beat the deadline by being 10
minutes overtime

He is now labeled as an ofticuil
candidate tor St; President along
\Hlll Peggy Pearson. but by being
to minutes past the deadline. his
application should never have
been accepted in the first place

Now it one looks back at the
campaign ot. the past year he can
also see political corruption. The
Brenda Hamer at't'air within the
\lendelsdort Machine has been
one ot the biggest farces of our
time Paster received the 80
Vice Presidency while the
student body was away for
(‘hristmas recess. He was
therefore elected through the
most corrupt political bargaining
process which was available at
the time

Let‘s end a repetition of such
political corruption There is one
candidate who promises to
launch an honest campaign and
return Student tilnet‘ttt'tttt‘tn
back to the student body

He is running without a \‘P on
his slate, but this \\|ll not stop
lltlll llis past perloi‘maiices "low
that he is a man ot sincere
dedication He has been most
.ttl|\t‘ iii Inixei‘sity attairs and
was actually a candidate for 56
President last year.

.\llt'll dedication to the student
body toices Iiiiii to rim again this
\ear (let a hold ot his platlorm
and listen to him spt'llk \\ith this
iii mind you will ha\e no other
recourse but to elect John Paul
