- Biography / History
- Clay Lancaster (1917-2000) was an advocate of historic preservation and the author of several architecture and art history mongraphs. Raised in Lexington, Kentucky, Lancaster moved to New York City in 1943 where he taught at Cooper Union, Columbia University, Traphagen art school, and New York University. He returned to Kentucky in 1978 and taught at Transylvania University and the University of Kentucky. Lancaster received several awards for his work on historic preservation, including the Lexington-Fayette County Historic Commission Preservation Award and the Kentucky Heritage Commission’s Preservation Professional Award in 1979 and the Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation's John Wesley Hunt Award in 1986.
- Scope and Content
- Collection includes three 1957 letters from Lancaster to DePol concerning the latter's commission by the Blue Grass Trust for a wood engraving to be used on Hunt-Morgan House stationery. Lancaster's suggestions and criticisms are detailed. Included are six copies of notecards depicting DePol's design. Lancaster's 1960 letter asks DePol to suggest a printer for his book Old Brooklyn Heights: New York's First Suburb. . . . (1960).
