- Biography / History
- The Southern Conference Educational Fund (SCEF) was active from 1946 until 1981, specifically working to end segregation and champion Civil Rights in the Southern United States. Originally founded as a part of the Southern conference for Human Welfare, the organization became separate in 1947, basing its activities out of New Orleans, Louisiana. Carl and Ann Braden ran the organization from the mid 1960s until the 1970s, moving the main office to Louisville, Kentucky in 1966. After a clash between the Black Panthers and Communist members of the SCEF, the SCEF voted to expell Communist members over the objections of the Bradens. The organization then moved to Atlanta, Georgia, before disbanding due to financial problems in 1981.

- The Southern Conference Educational Fund records (dated 1968-1976; 0.45 cubic feet; 1 box) include minutes, agendas, memoranda, and publications documenting the organizations operations in Louisville, Kentucky, to end segregation. The Southern Education Fund records include meeting materials (minutes, agendas, memos) from 1970-1973. As well as the organizations publication, The Southern Patriot, from 1968-1975. These materials document the actions of the Southern Conference Education Fund in Louisville, which was committed to ending segregation through direct actions and education.
