Collection Overview

Biography / History
James P. Noffsinger (1925-2001), a native of Union, Indiana, and a recipient of a doctorate in architecture from Catholic University, taught architectural history and Japanese culture at the University of Kentucky. Before coming to Kentucky, Noffsinger also taught at the University of Mennesota and Kansas University. In addition, after coming to Kentucky, he spent a year teaching at the Institut Teknologie at Bandung, Indonesia. He was the recipient of three Fulbright awards (England, Japan, and Norway) and the King Olav V American Scandinavian Foundation Grant (norway). He was also a member of the League of World War I Aviation Historians; The First World War Aviation Historical Society (International), and the Navy League. His interest in World War I aviation began in childhood and eventually led him to publish several articles and longer works including: World War I Aviation:A Bibliography of Books in English (1987) and World War I Aviation: A Bibliography of Books in English, French, German, and Italian (1997). A veteran bibliographer, Noffsinger also wrote 39 bibliographies about Japanese architecture. He was married to Dr. Anne Russell Lillis Noffsinger and the couple had two daughters and a son.
Scope and Content
The James P. Noffsinger Aviation Collection (dated 1914-1996, undated; 18 cubic feet; 23 boxes) consists of scrapbooks, articles, photographs, and newspaper clippings on World War I and World War II aviation collected and created by Noffsinger. The collection contains James Noffsinger's aircraft drawinggs, notebooks, manuscripts, and correspondence pertaining to his own aviation research and writings. Of particular note is correspondence relating to World War I aviator Lieutenant (later General) Victor H. Strahm. This file includes copies of letters Strahm sent home to his parents, Noffsinger's handwritten notes, and letters between Strahm and Noffsinger.
