INDIAN SKELETONS FROM THE MUSEUM BURIALS I
AT MOUNDVILLE . l
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS '4
l wish hereby to acknowledge 1ny indebtedness to those in- i ' Q
dividuals who helped to make possible the preparation of this ·
paper. I ani very grateful to Dr. \\'alter B. _lones. Director of E
the Alabama Museum of Natural History; and to Mr. David L.
Dejarnette, Curator of the ;\labama Museum of Natural History for
their kindnesses in providing me with the opportunity of measuring _ _
and observing the Museum burials at Moundville. I am obliged to { _ i
Mr. lrlarold li. Dahms, Chief Laboratory .»\rchaeologist and Mr.
Marshall T. Newman of Harvard L`niversity who. as my col- * ‘
leagues at the .~\rchaeological Laboratory, have made many helpful .
suggestions and constructive criticisms of the manuscript. I am T
deeply indebted to George S. Graham. M.D.. of Birmingham, for I
his able diagnoses of the pathological specimens. I am obligated
to the \\vorl< Projects Administration for the facilities and per- · .' ‘
sonnel employed in the preparation of the photographs as well as { '
the manuscript itself. I

lies partially in Tuscaloosa and partially in Hale counties. in the ·
northwestern part of central .\labama. The museum burials at Y
Mound State Monument form a prominent feature of the Museum _ . . i
building which was erected over the burial areas inclosed within _ V
the north-south wings of the Museum. The burials in both areas. A
varying in depth from one to four feet. are in most cases placed on _
the back in either extended or partially flexed positions and are
usually accompanied by an abundance of burial offerings consisting .
of shell—tempered pottery vessels. stone discs. shell beads and i "
g0fg¤·ts. and in a few easee copper objects. This sample of the fl _
