Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Established in 1918, the Kentucky Model High School of the University of Kentucky was under the control of both the University of Kentucky and the Board of Education of Lexington for its first year. It was located in the building today called Frazee Hall. It provided student teaching opportunities for UK undergraduate and graduate students, as well as an avenue for faculty to explore and test various pedagogical methods. Following the school's first year, it was placed completely under the control of the Department of Education of the University of Kentucky. In 1927, a gift of $150,000 from the General Education Board of New York for a new training school building was offered to the school on the condition that the state of Kentucky matched the gift. After the General Assembly of Kentucky gathered the required funds, construction of a new building began. The new school, located on South Upper Street and renamed University High School, was completed in 1930. In June 1965, the school was closed due to financial concerns. Today, the building is called Taylor Education Building.
