HISTORY

One happy day in September l939 many new and shining faces appeared in University
School for the first time; Carey, Mary, Nancy, Sissy, Frank and Marshall were among those

present. That year was very exciting; the dressing in Halloween costumes and parading in all

the other rooms, the wonder of our first Xmas program, the weeks and weeks of work learning
"Away in the Manger, " and the presentswe made for our mothers (a plaster cast of our hands),
these all went to make up a mOst wonderful year. First grade found the arrival of Lyn to our
class and many activities in store for us; the trip we took to the campus to gather nuts and
then back to school to make candy; and then that memorable day when we sold lemonade
and made $2.l9 for some long forgotten project. Carolyn ioined us in second grade and Miss
Adams gave us a real thrill when she took us to the fire station and the Southern R R and we
came back and went to work most enthusiastically on our own train. Also under her tutelage
we gave the "Three Billy Goats Gruff, " and who could forget the 'tromping' as we went over
the bridge .

Who of us could fail to remember the day in third grade when Miss Willson, in her zeal
to catch Lyn and administer iustpunishment, fell flat - and great was the fall thereof aswell
as the merriment. Barbara, Betty Jo, Jean Elaine and Kay ioined us the next year as did our
own Mr. Ginger and here in Miss Molloy's room saw the giving of the play “Rumplestiltskin”
(how we must have loved plays) and the election of cheerleaders, Barbara, Carey, Sissy,
Betty Jo and Kay with size 42 sweaters coming to our knees. Barbara left us for Kenwick in
the fifth grade and this year, under Miss Belser, we saw the lull before the storm.

The next year Barbara rejoined us and Grandison became one of us for the first time. The
activities hit with all furywhat with the Skywriter and theglorious Xmas program, (remember
Barbara, Carey and Jean Elaine as angels and Jimmy Shippey, Lyn and Johnny B. as the three
wise men?), and the piece de resistance, “Peter Pan,” (shades of the immortal Barriel).
Who does not remember the drowsy spring day when, during the reading of "Lassie" aloud,

Boswell succumbed to sleep and fell out of his seat into the aisle.

The feel of importance when we went to the High School side for the first time and the
thrill of the entire class for the blassoming love affair of Barbara and Willie highlighted our
seventh grade. It was this year that three of our own girls, Barbara, Sissy and Helen Vance
were chosen by real iudges as Junior High cheerleaders. In this year, Helen Vance, Susan,
Garland and Catherine entered U-Hi and it was in the next that Patsy, Virginia and Sammy
sought and received admittance into our grade. This term will long be remembered for the
convocation program which was a take off on a faculty meeting. Surely the teachers realized
it was all in fun? The ninth grade saw the addition of Glenn to our group and the taking of the
overnight trip to Cincinnati with the basketball team where Carey gave a party at the T.P.
for the team and U Hians. It was also this year that we gave our Pep Club banquet with the
Toyland theme .

Our second year in high school gave us our Sophomore Dance--what hours we spent in
anticipation and work for it and who could forget the candy and apple sales that made the
dance possible. Barbara Ashbrook, Leila and Jack came to us this year while Toss, David and
Neale ioined the happy throng the next year. This iunior year saw more activity than any
other year except possibly the sixth. Here we had our magazine sales to make money for our
Junior Prom when we made more than any other class had ever made (we always knew there
was something extra special about us). Then our overnight trip to E town, our own Junior Prom
with some of 'us' in the court and, thrillof thrills, a basketball team thatwent to the quarter
finals in the state tournament. Almost too much for any class to take.

And now our senior year is over--our dance a thing of the past, our play behind us, the
Baccalaureate Sermon, Senior Breakfast and Graduation a memory. It is with a feeling of
regret that we, who have become so much richer through our association with the students and
teachers at U High, must take leave of Our school, knowing that we have profited by our

years of work and hoping that we have made and will continue to make our school as proud of

us as we are of it.
