Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Sociologist Howard Wayland Beers was born on April 14, 1905, in Gouerneur, New York. Beers obtained his Bachelor's degree in 1929, his Master's degree in 1930, and his Ph.D. in 1935 from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Beers married Bernice Van Sickles on March 31, 1929, and they had three children; Marylyn Ruth (Welsh), Rowland Van Sickle, and Julia Bernice. Prior to his 35-year employment at the University of Kentucky, Beers held several academic and professional appointments: Instructor of Rural Sociology at Cornell University (July 1931 to November 1933 and September 1934 to January 1935); Assistant Professor of Rural Sociology at Washington State College (February 1935 to September 1935); Associate Professor of Rural Sociology at the University of Wisconsin (October 1935 to January 1936); and Associate Professor at Rutgers University (February 1936 to January 1939). While at Rutgers, Beers also served as New Jersey 4-H Club Leader from June 1937 to January 1939.
- In February 1939, Beers was appointed professor of Rural Sociology at the University of Kentucky. He served as Head of the Department of Sociology from 1952 to 1959. During this time, Dr. Beers was elected president of numerous groups such as the Kentucky Conference of Social Welfare, Lexington Council for Social Planning, Kentucky State Welfare Association, and Family Welfare Society. Much of Beers' career at the University of Kentucky (1949-1968, detailed below) included leaves of absences consulting or on assignment for various federal international programs. Beers returned full-time to the University in 1968, serving as the Director of the Center for Developmental Change. In summer 1973, he was appointed Associate Dean of Graduate School, and retired the following year in July 1974.
- In 1949, Dr. Beers' international engagement began with a Fulbright Professorship in Athens, Greece, and roles as Coordinator of Rural Projects for the Near East Foundation and Advisor to the European Cooperation Agency. From 1959 to 1966 in Bogor, Indonesia, Beers served as an Associate for the Agricultural Development Council; a Community Development Specialist for the Council on Economic and Cultural Affairs; and the Chief of Party of the University of Kentucky's Technical Assistance Team to Institut Pertanian Bogor (Bogor Agricultural Institute/Bogor Agricultural University). In 1967, Beers was a member of the President's Science Advisory Commission.
- Beers wrote and presented numerous articles, bulletins, and lectures during his career, including two books about the University of Kentucky program with the Bogor Agricultural University, Indonesia : Resources and Their Technological Development (Lexington, Kentucky: The University Press of Kentucky, 1970) and An American experience in Indonesia : the University of Kentucky affiliation with the Agricultural University at Bogor (Lexington, Kentucky: The University Press of Kentucky, 1971). Beers died, age 94, in Lexington, Kentucky, on September 20, 1999.
- Scope and Content
- The Howard Beers papers (dated 1920-1989, undated, bulk 1958-1985; 10 cubic feet, 10 record storage cartons) comprise correspondence, writings and speeches, course materials, research materials (field notes, trip notes, notebooks), and printed material documenting Howard Beers' education and scholarly career as a sociologist and international consultant, primarily at the University of Kentucky. Organizations and subjects represented in the collection through correspondence, printed material, and writings and speeches include the University of Kentucky Research Foundation (UKRF) and the University of Kentucky Center for Developmental Change (CDC) and its Kentucky Contract Team in Indonesia; the Near East Foundation; the Southeast Asia Development Advisory Group (SEADAG); community development in India; and the opportunities, challenges, and activities of international technical aid provided by the United States and the University of Kentucky to developing countries, particularly in Southeast Asia. Beers' field and trip notes, notebooks, writings and speeches, correspondence, and course materials provide evidence of the education of and research questions, methodologies, and analyses conducted by sociologists in the United States in the mid-twentieth century.
