 I PREFACE
. The Historical Records Survey was organized early in 1936 under
2 the national direction of Luther H. Evans, as a part of Federal Project
1 No. 1, works Progress Administration. The task of surveying the manue
script materials in the nation, private papers as distinct from public
, archives and church records,‘was undertaken as a part of the program
' for the fulfillment of the aim of the project, to make available his—
‘ torical source materials. Besides the preparation of guides to deposi—
, tories of manuscripts and to manuscript collections, the program calls
for the publication of calendars and catalogues of important individ~
ual collections”
The Du Simitiére PaperS'were purchased in 1785 by the Library
Company of Philadelphia,'with rare books, broadsides, and paintings,
at the auction sale of the effects of Pierre Eugene Du Simitiéres noted
traveler, collector, artist, and antiquaryx Their importance is consida
erablc as a source of information on bibliography, natural historyg
Indian life, and various aspects of colonial history.
Du Simitiere spent a lifetime gathering the materials described .
herein, which he planned eventually to use as the basis for a general
history of Nortthmerica. Born about 1736 in Geneva, Switzerland; (1)
this colorful wanderer early found his way to the West Indies, and
thence to the North American colonies, with which his career is identiw
fiedg
He traveled extensively in the'West Indies in the ten or more
years preceding 1764, gathering historical materials and natural
history specimens, collecting coins, and making drawings of objects of
interest. He acquired, too. a fluency in English, so that upon his
‘ arrival in New York in 1784 or 1765, he was well prepared to continue
his activities as a collector;
Du Simitiereis first years in the continental colonies were spent
in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Burlington, New Jersey. He has
came a naturalized citizen in New York in 1769, (2) and shortly therem
after made Philadelphia his home» The American Philosophical Society
elected him to membership in 1768, and in 1777 he became one of its ,
curators. In 1781 the College of New Jersey Zfiow Princeton University7
1 conferred upon him the honorary degree of Master of Arts; '
i . According to his own statement, (3) Du Simitiére had no _L.Llar
source of revenue except from painting and designing. He deaigned the
vignette for the titleepage of Robert AitkenVS Pennsylvania magazine,
- published in 1775276; the frontispiece for the United ssfis‘i/fgg‘ja'Ei'n'e
in 1779; and a picture of a "New Electrical Machine" for the third

'EE The manuscripts catalogued herein are bound in ten volumes, vary- .
E’E ing in size. They appear to have been bound shortly after they were
:EE acquired by the Library Company, at which time the titles on the back- 1
LEE straps_were assigned. Each volume is described separately, following '
1E the order of the items contained therein. Titles for individual items E
EEE Were furnished by the cataloguers, except where indicated in quotation
"E marks to show that they have been taken from the papers described. All
Eij the documents are original except where otherwise indicated in the
:J entry. Eleven pamphlet volumes related to the manuscript material, and
E} , bearing notations in Du Simitiere's hand, are listed in the catalogue.
Li The appendixes furnish further keys to Du Simitiere materials: the :'
H? broadside of the Du Simitiere sale, and a catalogue of the newspapers -

E; The descriptive catalogue was prepared under the general direction 5
NH of John C. Funck, Administrative Assistant, with John E. Bender acting
gE as Project Supervisor in charge. Final editing of the material as pre-
ffi sented herein was done by Bernard 8. Levin, State Editor of Manuscripts,
E3 in accordance with the detailed comments and criticism of Margaret
:E Sherburne Eliot, Assistant Archivist in charge of the manuscript inVen-
h; tories, in the washington office.
ti Thanks are due Austin K. Gray, Librarian of the Library Company of
{VE Philadelphia, and Barney Chesnick, librarian in charge of the Ridgway ’
Eié Branch, for their generous assistance in the preparation of the catalogue.

DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE OF
THE DU SIT-TITIEIRE PAPERS
VOLUME Yi 963 F. —- Papers relating to natural history
Descriptive Note.
Backstrip title, in stamped gold letters: PAPERS / RELAT: TO /
NATURAL / HISTORY /. Size of volume: 25 cm x 40 cm. _
The volume, which is in need of repair, is bound in boards with a
leather backstrip. It consists of various unmounted manuscripts of dif-
ferent sizes bound together. No page nor item enumeration exists. The cnu~
merdtion employed in the catalogue is based upon the sequence of items in
the volume.
The manuscripts are, apparently in the handwriting of Du Simitiare,
although his signature does not appear. From available internal and extor—
nul evidence the items appear to have been written bothen the years 1765
and 1773, although they are usually undated. A notation in the upper right-
hond corner of the recto of the first leaf of item 1 reads: "1764 New York".
The handwriting is in ink and is generally neat and legible. Most of the
manuscripts are written in French.
There are thirty-four manuscripts, of varying lengths, consisting of
catalogues, lists, descriptions, accounts, notes, and bibliographical ref-
erences to plants, animals, and a few archaeological specimens in North and
South America, chiefly in the West Indies, and, especially, in Santo Domingo.
Much of the material Du Simitiere extracted Verbatim or summarized from books
and articles which he cited; the remainder he apparently compiled either as
the result of his own obserVations and travels or obtained from other unman-
tioned sources. _ .
