The Yucatecan letters as a unit of the collection comprises letters and other documents written between 1778 and 1863 from points which all but circle the Gulf of Mexico. The bulk of the material, however, belongs to the last three years of the eighteenth century and the first twenty-five years of the nineteenth. The writer is most often the Captan General of Yucatan; the topics covered in the documents include traffic on the Gulf, the military set-up, orders from the King, and many others"--P. iv-v.
