- John Fuller Taylor (1912-1992) was born to Walter A. Taylor (1864-1947) and Lucy Eva Fuller Taylor (1879-1959) of Barneveld, New York. Walter A. Taylor was a reverend and Lucy was a public school teacher according to both of their obituaries. John Fuller Taylor attended Holland Patent High School in Barneveld and went on to study at Cornell Univerity. John was a biological chemistry professor at Cornell, Washington University and Harvard University before becoming a doctor. John married Portia Hopper (1913-1993) on June 22, 1935 in Ithaca, New York. John and Portia had two sons together, Herbert Hopper Taylor (b.1940) and Walter Douglas Taylor (b.1943).
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The John Fuller Taylor papers (dated 1885, 1924-1953, undated; 0.45 cubic feet; 1 box, 2 photographs) comprises letters, photographs, postcards, papers, newspaper clippings, and a journal that document the life of John Fuller Taylor, a young doctor from Barneveld, New York during the first part of the twentieth century. The letters in this collection are sent to John from his wife, parents and aunt. His wife writes to John while the two are apart from one another, whether it be a vacation, trip to home or professional trips. She sends him many love letters and postcards while she takes a vacation with friends in Tennessee and out west to California. John's parents both write to John frequently. Their letters discuss sending money, weather, town gossip, their health and plans to come visit John while he is in St. Louis, Missouri. Once John and Portia have their two sons, Herbert and Walter, John's mother draws pictures on the back of the letters for them. The two photographs in this collection include a photo of a front porch and a portrait of a member of the Taylor family. The journal is a cash account kept during John's time at Cornell University. The newspaper clippings feature obituaries of John's parents and other members of the Taylor family. Also featured are comic strips, Barneveld church services and news about the local Boy Scout troop.
- The John Fuller Taylor papers collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
