- Biography / History
- Alvin L. Zachary was born in Casey County, Kentucky, December 22, 1912. He worked for the Sperry Rail Service before enlisting to serve in the United States Army in 1942. Following his service during World War II, he relocated with his family to Lafayette, Indiana, where he taught Soil Classification and Survey from 1954-1978 at Purdue University. His wife, Nettie Zachary (nee Rich) was born April 13, 1913 in Liberty, Kentucky. Nettie was a 1937 graduate of Berea College. Alvin and Nettie Zachary married in 1943 and had a son, Robert N. Zachary in 1949. Nettie Zachary died in 1995. Alvin Zachary died in 2005.
- Scope and Content
- The Zachary family letters (dated 1934-1945; 1.13 cubic feet; 3 boxes) primarily consist of letters written during World War II from serviceman Alvin L. Zachary to his wife Nettie Rich Zachary of Liberty, Kentucky. The letters written by Zachary between 1941 and 1942 were posted from Illinois, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Florida while he worked for the Sperry Rail Service on a Dynanometer Car. His letters from late 1942 until 1945 reflect his military service in the European theater during World War II. The collection also includes assorted postcards from Alvin Zachary and others to Nettie Rich, several maps, unlabeled photographs, and a few articles of memorabilia.
