Collection Overview

Biography / History
Conductor and violist George Zack was born in 1936 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, but established roots in Ohio and Kentucky early in his professional career. After he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Theory and Composition from Wichita State University (1958) and a Master of Music in Theory and Viola from the University of Michigan (1960), Zack taught and developed the orchestra at Hiram College in Ohio, where he was an Associate Professor of Music (1964-1972). He conducted Ohio's Wooster Symphony from 1965-1967 and served as conductor and music director of the Warren Chamber Orchestra from 1968-1999. Zack came to Lexington, Kentucky in 1972, where, while completing work on a Ph.D. in Music Theory from Florida State University, he was invited to be guest conductor of the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra. Later that spring, Zack was hired as the LPO's Music Director and Conductor.
Zack was engaged nationally and locally as a music professional and community arts leader. In addition to his work with the LPO, Zack guest conducted and had leadership roles in many arts organizations. He served as interim conductor of the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra and as the music director in charge of artistic operation and development for the All State Orchestras in Ohio, New York, and Kentucky. He was a member of the American Symphony Orchestra League, the Conductor's Guild, and the American Federation of Musicians, and a founding member of the Humanitarium Center for Culture and Diversity. Zack served on the advisory boards of Kentucky Educational Television (KET), The National Society of Arts and Letters, and the Jazz Foundation. Zack also hosted a weekly radio program on WEKU (Richmond, Kentucky) called "George Zack's Enhancement of Music."
Zack's renown as a conductor was widely recognized. Throughout his career, he received numerous awards in recognition of his leadership and commitment to the arts, including Musician of the Year for Arts Lifetime Achievement by the Kentucky Arts Council (1998), artist residencies at Eastern Kentucky University and James Madison University, the Happy Chandler Scholarship Foundation Distinguished Artist award (2008), and the Artist Award for lifetime achievement in the arts at the 1998 Governor's Awards in Frankfort, Kentucky. Zack was also the recipient of the prestigious National Conference for Community and Jusice Lauren Weinberg Humanitarian Award in 1997 and the Lexington Optimist Club Cup in 1999 for his outstanding community service in Lexington.
In 2006, Zack announced his retirement from the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra and in 2009, he officially stepped off the stage after 37 years as a leader of the LPO.
