Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Virgil E. Fowler was born in Washington, D.C. in 1887 to James Fowler (1855-1923) and Lila Vanzandt (b. 1867). By 1900, Virgil was living in Portsmouth, Ohio with his mother and step-father. In 1909, Fowler married Ethel Mutchler (1887-1964) and together the couple had three sons: Virgil H. (1918-2002), Paul E. (1922-1998), and Robert E. (1924-2001). Fowler owned and operated three businesses in Portsmouth, a camera shop, a photo works, and an x-ray laboratory.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The V.E. Fowler photographs (dated 1946-1950, undated; 0.08 cubic feet; 2 boxes) comprise negatives and photographs that show the lives of families in Kentucky and Ohio following World War II. The photographs are items that were returned to the developer due to being unclaimed by the recipients. The photographs depict daily life, spending time with family and friends, sightseeing, military service, and landscape views. Recipients include J.L. Allen, Lou Carter, William Lewis, and Earl Fultz.
- The V.E. Fowler photographs are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
