Out damned
spot

It seems like college life
is synonymous with
having pets. Whether
it be a little kitten
named Chloe, a
puppy named Bently.
or a guinea pig
named Gus. many
students have pets.
Here is a short list of
what those pets may
tell about the
average college
student.

Monkey: Rich. Too much
free time on their
hands. Rich. Someone
who wants a kid but
doesn't what to deal
with the opposite sex
or adopt.

Rock: Engineering major.
Does not have the
sense of
responsibility for a
real pet demanding a
daily feeding ritual
Wants to talk to
things and not get
talked back too.

Guinea Pig: Wants a pet
that is cute, friendly.
and can fit in a small
cage. These people
may be from New
Guinea and be a pig,
since the guinea pig
is neither. Beverages
consumed at this
house may include
those that rhyme
with Bim Jean and
Lud Bight.

Dogipuppy): Recently
moved into a house
that allows pets.
wants to meet
girlstlet me know if
this works), and likes
to do things
outdoors. Enjoys the
companionship of a
loyal pet and does
not mind drool
dripping from their
shoes, newspaper.
couch, bed.
toothbrush, etc.

Iguana: Alternative type
who does not mind
being looked at for
being different.
Common clothing
includes leather and
chains. Eats Ho
burgers a lot and is
fond of pinball
machines.

Gnats and Fruit flies:
Partiers to the end.
Keeping the house
clean would do
nothing for them
except kill their pets.
Find drinking beer
from a bong a fair
trade for finding
extra protein in their
cereal.

Phirana: A guy who likes
to see fish go into a
frenzy about fresh
food in the water,
sort of like he does
upon entering a bar.
ls his own self but
likes to impress too.

Fish: Wants a pet but
doesn’t want to walk
it everyday. Likes the
appeal of the
fishtank but doesn’t
care enough to know
if they have been fed
today or yesterday.

thanks to excellent actors. are
convincible These characters
could have easily turned iitto
laughable people it they were
not portrayed correctly.

Nevertheless. the greatest
mistake of. the movie is its.
short length which prohibits
the character dtw'elopment and
more distinctly. the plot.

With a large opening
weekend. we can expect sever
al more mm ies from this conr
ic series. Let's just hope the
motie is‘ a little longer next
time.

Bostofthebest

Top 5: The following, in no particular order,
are Scene Editor Patrick Avery's picks for the
best DVD's available as of July 19, 2000.

Rushmore: Criterion Collection

This is my favorite DVD, not so much because of what it offers, but because
it is such a great movre. Wes Anderson’s story about an overachieyer at a
private school is hilarious dark comedy. That Just scratches the surface for
this DVD. The DVD includes audio commentary from Wes Anderson and co-
writer Owen Wilson, who also wrote Bottle Rocket with Anderson. The special
features are wonderful. They include the entire ”Charlie Rose Show"
intervrews with Anderson and (0-star of Rushmore Bill Murray, The highlights
however are the main character's reenactments of such popular movres such as
The Truman Show, Serb/co and Out of Sight.

Psycho(l960): Collector’s Edition

Alfred Hitchcock is perhaps one of the best directors ever. The way he pulls
the audience’s emotions make his movies some of the best thrillers ever
made. The DVD contains so much. including the original theatrical trailer
starring Hitchcock himself. Other documentaries and stock footage of the
opening premiere are also on the disc. The coolest thing is watching the
shower scene with and without music. Until that, i did not realize the power
of Bernard Herrmann’s score of the meme.

Fight Club

This two-DVD is saturated with extra features. The first disc contains the
movie with three different audio commentaries, highlighted by the one
wrth actors Edward Norton and Brad Pitt. The second disc contains delet-
ed scenes, documentaries on how certain scenes were shot, storyboards
and all of the theatrical traders. The funniest trailers are mock public
service announcements by Norton and Pitt. This is the DVD that keeps on
giving. There is so much stuff on here it would take easily over a month,
with a busy schedule, to find everything on these two discs.

Alien: Special Edition

The best thing about this disc is that there is something for everyone on it.
The prime example is all of the audio tracks: a director commentary for the
folks who want to know how the film was made, an isolated film score for
the music fiends. and many foreign language tracks. Multiple deleted
scenes and behind-the-scenes footage just add to the complete package.
Turn the lights down and enjoy one of the scariest movies ever.

The Abyss: Special Edition

Despite some people's disenchantment with director James Cameron’s
movies, I think this Cameron film is an entertaining thriller. The DVD is
incredible with all of its multiple features, including the director's cut
version of the film with 28 minutes of extra footage. The original theatrical
release is also available, but is difficult to understand without the extra
footage. A hour long documentary offers insight into the making of the film.
The disc also has many DVD-ROM features such as three interactive games.
However unless you have a computer with a DVD—ROM, these extras are of
no use.
