Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Underwood brothers (Elmer and Bert) founded Underwood and Underwood in Ottowa, Kansas in 1880. The company originally sold stereoscopic images door-to-door, as well as home stereoscope kits. The company grew rapidly, eventually moving to New York (1887), producing its own photographs (1891), providing photographs to newspapers (1896), and establishing a wire-service-like sales agency (1904). Underwood and Underwood dominated the news-photography industry until 1920. They sold their back catalogue and rights to the Keystone View Company, which was subsequently acquired by Mast Industries in the 1970s. Most of the original glass negatives have since been donated to the University of California, Riverside.
