- Biography / History
- Rogers C.B. Morton was born in 1914 in Louisville, KY. After graduating from Yale University in 1937, Morton married Anne Jones in 1939. Morton enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941, serving as a private during World War II in the European Theater. He received commission during the war and returned a Captain in 1945. After the war, Morton worked as company president in the family flour business, Ballard and Ballard. After Ballard and Ballard merged with Pillsbury Flour Company in 1952, Morton worked as director.
- After the war, Morton helped his brother successfully run for House of Representatives in Kentucky, leading to his own interest in politics. After relocating to Maryland in the early 1950s, Morton ran for Congress in Maryland's first district, winning a seat in 1962. He would be re-elected four more times from 1963-1971. Morton also worked for Richard Nixon in the 1968 presidential campaign. After election, President Nixon named Morton chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1969. President Nixon later nominated Morton for Secretary of the Interior in 1971. As Secretary of the Interior, Morton focused on environmental conservation, traveling throughout National Parks in the western states. He also traveled abroad, representing the Interior Department in delegation trips to Asia and Europe.
- Secretary Morton continued to serve as Secretary of the Interior under Gerald Ford after President Nixon's resignation in 1974. President Ford nominated Morton as Secretary of Commerce in 1975 and later worked for President Ford as his campaign manager during the 1976 election. After the election, Morton officially retired from politics, returning to his estate in Maryland. Morton passed after a lengthy bout with prostate cancer in 1979.
- Anne Morton Kimberly (nee Jones) was born in Louisville, KY in 1922. She attended the Great Barrington School and the American Ballet School. After marrying Rogers C.B. Morton in 1939, she worked as a nurse's aid during World War II, also overseeing the family farm in Louisville. She, Rogers, daughter Anne, and son David, moved to Maryland after the war where they supported Morton's political career. Her dedication to the environment greatly influenced Secretary Morton's term as Secretary of the Interior. She served on National Park Service Advisory Board from 1975 to 1981 and on the board of the World Wildlife Fund from 1983 to 1986. She particularly advocated for the conservation of timber wolves, even appearing on the Today Show alongside a live wolf. She also greatly advocated global travel and sponsored scholarships enabling foreign students to attend school in the USA. After Secretary Rogers Morton's death in 1979, Anne Morton married John R. Kimberly, a active member of Maryland's non-profit organizations. Anne Morton Kimberly lived to 94, passing in 2011 at her home in Maryland.

- The Rogers and Anne Morton papers (dated 1945-1987, undated; 7.06 cubic feet; 32 boxes, 2 items) includes photographs, photograph albums, letters, and memorabilia relating to Rogers and Anne Morton's travels as Secretary of the Interior. The photographs depict Rogers and Anne Morton's international relation trips to Japan, China, Poland, Iceland, Spain, France, and Great Britain. The photographs also include trips to U.S. national parks in Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, and the Southwest. Also included are photos of Rogers and Anne Morton attending public events like press conferences, fundraisers, and a theatrical premiere of Godspell.
- The collection includes various diplomatic trip iteneraries and documentation. The collection also includes personal and professional correspondence to and from Rogers and Anne Morton between 1945 and 1987. Also included are various newspaper clippings about the Mortons spanning 1966-1974.
