Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Kentucky Association of Family and Consumer Sciences first formed under the name Kentucky Home Economics Association (KHEA) formed in 1922 as an Affiliate of the American Home Economics Association. The organization encourages research, education, and career development in areas like personal finance, diet and fitness, child and elder care, apparel design and production, and consumer affairs.The Kentucky Home Economics Association has partnered with colleges and universities throughout the commonwealth to provide resurces for students studying home economics professional development for members working in the field. It has also given awards and scholarships for active members and students in support of their achievements. KHEA formed central, eastern, and western districts to support members locally. Additionally, sections were formed with areas of focus like the Home Economics in Business (HEIB) section and Student Member chapters and clubs. In 1994, the AHEA changed its name to the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. The following year Kentucky chapter adopted the name Kentucky Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.

The collection also includes awards, event programs, event and member photographs and artifacts representing the support of KAFCS' mission as a professional development organization.

Scope and Contents

The Audiovisual materials and photographs series primarily consists of photographs, from the mid 1960s through to the early 2000s, of Kentucky Association of Family and Consumer Sciences members and annual meetings. The bulk of the series consists of small format photographic prints, ink jet printer images, and digital photographs that were originally housed on compact disks. Also included is a microcasette audio recording of a former president of KAFCS reviewing duties for the incoming president and an educational film on vhs tape about careers in home economics.
