Occasional Papers
The Library is considering instituting a series of Occasional Papers.
If you have suggestions for contents, format, contributors, call or
write Rhoda Channing in the Business Library. Rhoda will also be
glad to answer questions concerning the project.
David Farrell on TV
David's interview of James Still aired on KET on Tuesday, February
13. David seemed completely at ease, and was in command of the
situation the whole time. We are proud of him, and hope that he
will do more of these programs in the future.
Photographic Archives
The Library recently received notification from the National Endowment
for the Humanities that we are the recipient of a $75,000 grant which E
will allow us to gain bibliographic control over a significant portion j
of the photographic archives in the Department of Special Collections
and Archives. University of Kentucky cost—sharing will bring the
total grant cost for a two year period to $l37,4l6.00.
The project will hopefully serve as a pilot for other institutions
with photographic holdings in addition to setting precedents and y
standards for reporting photographic collections in the new series of 1
National Historical Publications and Records Commission state manuscript/ —
primary resource guides. “
Encompassed in the grant are the Archives' holdings of approximately
65 cubic feet of negatives, prints, and antique processed and 75 linear
feet of gelatin dry plate glass negatives. Many of these photographs
were donated to the library along with accompanying manuscript material.
Included in the collection are early photographs of Lexington and other
communities throughout the Commonwealth, Appalachian photographs, porzri;
traits of l9th Century notables, a large collection relating to rail-
roading in the region, lantern slides of agricultural and university I
subjects, and examples of the major developments of photography; many
by important regional and national photographers. The project does not
include the Department's large holdings of photographs from its modern
political collections.

The various collections of photographs will retain their integrity
as collections. Within each collection organization will be done on
the box or folder level depending on the size of the collection. All
items will be individually sleeved in negative envelopes or interleaved
with paper and stored in apprpriate storage boxes. All materials
used will be acid free. Processed materials will be stored in temper-
ature and humidity controlled areas. Each item will be microfilmed
to provide patrons maximum access to the images without handling the
originals. Finding guides and catalog entries will be prepared for
each collection. Additional indicies will be compiled for important
subjects that recur throughout various collections. _The finding guides,
indices, and microfilm will allow the integration of the photographic
collections with the other primaty resource material in the department,
I thus permitting the widest possible use by a wide range of scholars.
The grant, which is scheduled to span the period Semptember, 1979 to
September, 1981, will tentatively be administered by Gerald Munoff.
Gerald, who had an Assistanship with the Department of Special Collections
y an Archives in 1977, is presently Assistant Archivist at Berea College. t I
