Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Despite the condemnation of nuclear weapons following World War II, nuclear research was a burgeoning science with much to offer the world outside of the weapons it could produce. To take advantage of this growing field, the United States created the Atomic Energy Commission with the purpose of controlling and advancing nuclear science. One of the sites they funded was the Oak Ridge Institute for Nuclear Science (ORINS).
- Louis Pardue, born 1900 in Scottsville, Kentucky, earned his PhD in physics at Yale in 1931 and returned to Kentucky to become a professor of physics at the University of Kentucky. He was the Dean of the Graduate School from 1948 to 1950 before being appointed Vice President and Director of Graduate Studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1950. Pardue worked as a nuclear physicist with the Manhattan Project from 1943 to 1945. Dr. Pardue became active in Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies in 1948 as a council representative from UK. He later joined the Board of Directors and held the title of Vice President of ORINS from 1959 until his death on April 26, 1963.
- Scope and Content
- The Louis Pardue Oak Ridge Institute for Nuclear Studies (ORINS) papers (dated 1945-1958; 2.2 cubic feet; 3 boxes) comprise meeting minutes, correspondence, theses, annual reports, pamphlets, and notes that document work in the field of nuclear studies completed with the Oak Ridge Institute for Nuclear Studies (ORINS) along with documenting the bureaucratic aspects of the scientific institute located in Tennessee. Files contain Council and smaller committee meeting minutes related to the work of ORINS. There are also full length thesis projects from students conducting research at ORINS.
