- Biography / History
- Lieutetia Pierson (1883-1974) was born in Clay County, West Virginia to David McKee Pierson (1842-1911) and Martha Jane Fugate (1844-1916). In 1906, she was engaged to Fred Hopkins, who drowned after he and Lieutetia failed to ford a flooded river. Three years later, in 1909, she secretly married James William Maxwell (1887-1971), an attorney also from West Virginia. They had two daughters together: Virginia (b. 1912) and Mary Louise (b. 1913). Lieutetia passed away in 1974.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Lieutetia Maxwell papers collection (dated 1906-1924; 0.13 cubic feet; 5 folders) comprises correspondence and newspaper clippings that document Lieutetia's relationship with her husband and life in West Virginia at the turn of the twentieth century. The correspondence primarily is between Lieutetia and her husband; the other letters are from family and friends sending their condolences after the drowning of her fiancé. The newspaper clippings also detail the drowning.
- The Lieutetia Maxwell papers are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
