Collection Overview

Biography / History
Lucien Edgar Harrison (1854-1937) was born in Cabell County, West Virginia to Otis Harrison (1827-1910) and Ruth Frances Taylor (1831-1918). In 1895, he married Nannie B. Trent (1872-1964); together they had three children: Otis Trent (1897-1933), Mary Ruth (1898-1987) and Lucien Edgar, Jr. (1900-1968). Lucien, Sr. initially worked as a teacher, then minister, and finally as an insurance salesperson.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Reverend L.E. Harrison, Sr. journals (dated 1909-1925, undated; 0.27 cubic feet; 5 folders) comprise ten journals that contain the sermons written and given by Harrison in the 1920s in West Virginia. The sermons come from both the Old and New Testaments, discussing life, divinity, sin, and how to apply the teachings of the bible to one's life. In the beginning of the journal from 1909 are notes about life insurance, from Harrison's time working as an insurance salesperson.
The Reverend L.E. Harrison, Sr. journals are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
