Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Clavia Goodman was the daughter of Sue Clay Goodman (1880-1965) and Dr. Cyril Goodman (1870-1938). Sue Clay and Dr. Goodman married in 1902 and had two children, Laurie (1905-1906) and Clavia (1907-1970). Mrs. and Dr. Goodman met in London and soon moved to Egypt, where Dr. Goodman held the role of Deputy Director General in the Department of Health. Dr. Goodman also worked as a corps surgeon in the British army, and the Goodman family lived in Egypt for many years before he retired in 1918. After retiring, the entire family moved to Paris, Kentucky, where Sue's family lived.
- Daughter of Cassius Marcellus Clay and Susan Elizabeth Clay Clay, Sue Clay Goodman was born in, and died in Kentucky. Her aunt was Laura Clay, a prominent figure in the women's suffrage movement, and one of the most important suffragists in the south. In 1946 Clavia published Bitter Harvest, a biography of Laura's suffrage work, which also contained an acknowledgements essay describing the interactions between people who personally knew Laura. In addition to the biography, Clavia authored many short stories, poems, and a longer manuscript titled Bluegrass Manners, none of which were published. Dr. Goodman was also a writer with many unpublished papers on current affairs, law, and medicine.
- Scope and Content
- The Clavia Goodman papers (dated 1856-1970; 10.88 cubic feet; 25 boxes) comprise letters, family records, manuscripts, printed materials, and negative photographs documenting the Goodman family while traveling and living in Cairo, Egypt, St. Ives, England, and Paris, Kentucky, during the early twentieth century. The bulk of the collection is letters to or from Clavia, Cyril, and Sue Goodman and relate news of family and friends living in Egypt, Europe, and America. The collection includes letters between Clay family members such as Brutus Junius Clay, Cassius M. Clay, Jr., Susan Elizabeth Clay Clay, of Paris, Kentucky and Anne Clay Shackelford, of Richmond, Kentucky. Many letters discuss life leading up to and during the First Second World Wars. The collection also includes diaries, drafts, and manuscripts written by individual members of the Goodman family and include short stories, journalistic articles on current affairs, and description of travel and daily life. Family records include information about baptisms, financial documents, health notes, letters of sympathy for the infant death of Cyril's and Sue's first daughter, school reports, and legal documents regarding a lawsuit over Cassius M. Clay, Jr.'s estate. Finally, the collection includes 119 photo negatives of family pictures, presumably from when the Goodman's lived on Stoner Avenue in Paris, Kentucky.
