Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Williamstown Temperance Society was a club of persons against the consumption of alcohol established in Williamstown, Kentucky in the early nineteenth century. The organization changed its name to the Washingtonian Society in 1846 to align itself with the Washingtonian Temperance Society begun in Baltimore in 1840. The Washingtonian Temperance movement encouraged those who have struggled with alcohol to share and depend on others who have struggled to remain totally abstinate.
