Insurance issue still in question;
student coverage not required

By Kyle Foster
Editor in Chief

UK is correcting a $4,500 mis-
take this week by notifying stu-
dents they don‘t need to buy
health insurance to stay enrolled
at UK.

Almost 23.000 students last
week received letters advising
them they needed health insurance

because of a state law. This
week those students received an-
other letter, informing them that
they don't need the insurance.
after all.

The first letter was part of an
insurance information packet put
together by UK Health Service,
UK officials explained that the
packet was sent to be printed in
April, four months before stu-
dents would rcceive it.

A court challenge to the state
law requiring the health coverage
has been pending in Franklin
(‘ounty since August. so officials
did not know in April whether the
insurance would be needed.

Franklin (‘ircutt .ludge Roger
(‘rittenden is expected to l\\llL‘ a
final rulingy soon. l'ndcr the ad—

Cool Cats lose playing field

It’s starting to look as if col-
lege hockey fans in Lexington
now will have to make road trips
to watch slap shots and wrist
shots —— because the UK hockey
team is being left out in the cold.

A press release Tuesday ex-
plained that the Lexington Ice
Center has notified the Hockey
Club and the UK Athletics De
partment of the decision not to re-
new the contract for the hockey

team‘s use of the Ice Center rink
for the 1992-93 season.

“This decision should not come
as a surprise to anyone.” said
Dennis Hyde, manager of the
Lexington Ice Center.

But the press release was a sur-
prise to the hockey team‘s
players and officials.

“I was really surprised to see
the fax.“ said Mark Shupe, man-
ager of the Cool Cats.

Shupe said he thought the fax
was sent because Ice Center man-
agement is upset over media cov-

erage.

“Obviously they read or heard
something in the media that art-
gered them." Shupe said.

“'lhey sent the fax because
they realize a lot of pressure is
building. I have had to send out a
lot of letters explaining that we
have been canceled. and people
are shocked and angry." Shupe
said.

“If' they think they are under
pressure now. wait until later. Es-
pecially when the students and

By Dale Greer
News Editor

When the fall semester is in full
swing. finding a parking spot near
campus requires diligence. sharp
eyes and sheer luck.

During peak class hours. scores
of cars circle off-campus streets
like sharks on the prowl. their
drivers waiting to pounce on any
vacant spot. It‘s a feeding frenzy
that would put a Jimmy Buffett
concert to shame —— and could
well drive you to seek solace in
Margaritaville.

Purchasing a campus parking
permit however. can preserve

your sanity and save you a lot of
hassle — but you‘d better hurry

If you had a permit last year
and want to renew it. you have
until tomorrow to drop off your
check and application at the cam-
pus parking office. 305 Euclid
Ave.

If you didn't have a permit last
year or want to change permit
types—fromaKtagtoaC tag.
for example — you have until
Aug. 7 to apply.

Students who had C or R per-
mits last year and still meet the
requirements are assured of get-
ting the same permit this year if
they apply by the July 31 dead-
line.

Any remaining passes will be
sold to students who apply before
the August deadline. said Sandy
Gary. UK’s parking manager.
’Ihese passes will be distributed
based on class standing.

For example. graduate students
and seniors are given a higher
priority than juniors and sopho-
mores. (‘rary said.

If any permits still remain. they
will be sold on a first-come. first-
served basis Sept. 14 in the cam-
pus parking office.

If you are at least a junior. plan
to take a minimum of 12 hours of
classes and will live at least one
mile from campus. you are eligi-
ble for a C permit. Gary said. The

most popular is the (‘—1 tag.
which allows you to park behind
Memorial Coliseum. ()ther (‘ lots
are located on Virginia Avenue
and on University Drive across
from the stadium.

R permits are available for
sophomores. juniors. seniors and
graduate students who live in
campus housing. as well its for
members of fraternities and soror-
ities whose houses are located on
campus. (ireeks need the dean of
students' approval to get a permit.
turd each fraternity and sorority
has different rules on who may
purchase one. (iary said
