Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- J.H. Cunningham & Co. was a general store operated in Springfield, Kentucky. From 1831-1832, J.H. Cunningham and Giles Smith operated the store in a partnership. In 1842, the estate of Giles Smith sued J.H. Cunningham for a share in the profits of the firm from this time period. Cunningham alleged that the firm was not profitable during the time Smith was his partner.
- Scope and Content
- The J.H. Cunningham & Company ledgers (dated 1827-1844; 1 cubic foot; 2 items) consist of two ledgers documenting the operation of the J.H. Cunningham Company, a general merchandise store, in Springfield, Kentucky. The ledgers record accounts by customer and date. The books track goods purchased, debts paid, residence, guardianships, and race. African-American customers are noted with "blk." in parentheses next to the customer name.
